University options and dropping out to switch courses while also resitting an A Level

Hi, so I am currently completing A levels in history, maths and psychology. I fear that maths has always been a bad subject for me and by looking at unofficial mark schemes, I am even struggling to get an E. I want to study law at university. A gap year is completely not possible due to my parents so I don’t know what to do. I was wondering if I complete my a levels this year and apply to a bad university that will accept good grades in my other subjects as well as an EPQ, could I resit a level maths in that year and apply to another better ranked university for 2026 entry. I would drop out of the university I was at at the time and then reapply through UCAS. How would that work and is it even possible?

This is theoretically possible, but there are quite a few things to watch out for:

1. Your timing probably doesn't work, as you say you'd "drop out of the university I was at at the time and then reapply through UCAS". That means you'd be dropping out by the end of January 2026, after only having been at uni for a few months, and not knowing whether your new application(s) were successful. Better to stay at the "bad university" (your term!) until you know the situation with your applications elsewhere.

2. You will be self-teaching yourself A level Maths, which you know is your weak subject. In a single year. Whilst also studying full-time at university. So you will have to be very focused and self-disciplined with your time.

3. There's a risk that your A level exam dates will clash with your end-of-year exams at uni. There's nothing you can do ahead to prevent that. You'll just need to hope that your uni are flexible and will allow you to sit their exam on a different day.

4. When you apply to the second uni via UCAS, you'll need a referee to (a) write your reference and (b) provide a predicted grade for your new A level. Would your school / college do that, do you think?

5. Would you be applying for any unis which require the LNAT for Law? If so, then you'd need to find time to study for that too.

6. How would your parents feel about you dropping out of one uni to restart first year somewhere else?

Please can you answer my scanerio and case

I need AAB for a course at Liverpool(business)

I do history, psych and biology
I think I’m gonna fail biology

But I reckon I could achieve 1 A and 1 B in history/psych or maybe 2 Bs
Would I be able to re do a year but self teach m myself a level business and re apply with my achieved grades and if I get 2 Bs can I ask if they would consider if I got an A in business? I also have EC

If you self-taught yourself A level business over the next year (which is possible, by the way) you'd be taking those exams in May/June 2026, and getting your results in August 2026. I mention this because you say you'd "re apply with my achieved grades". So you'd be applying via Clearing for 2026 entry? Or via the normal five choices route for 2027 entry?

Or is your plan to apply by January 2026 for September 2026 entry using your achieved grades at that point plus a predicted grade for A level Business? If so, is there a referee you could use to predict your Business grade?

normal five choices for 2026 entry??

And I think maybe like a private tutor or I could stay in contact with my form tutor who is a business teacher

Its totally normal to go into a doom-spiral after exams have finished. However you have probably done far better than you assume, so try not to worry. And, if things don't work out in August as you had hoped, school staff will be there to advise you on a sensible way forward.

You won't have your A level business result by then, so you'll be applying using your achieved grades for History, Psychology and Biology and a predicted grade for Business. Agreed? So the fact that you plan to "stay in contact with my form tutor who is a business teacher" could be key here. Or you could go down the private tutor route, who may be in a better position to give you a predicted grade.

Just bear in mind that only you nominated referee can enter predicted grades. If you use your tutor, your uni choices may ask for an additional reference from what would then be your current uni.
