Should I Follow Up on My Birmingham Application? + Course Change Question

Hey guys I have two questions,

I sent my Application to the University of Birmingham through UCAS Extra almost 20 days ago. I heard from them 3 days after I sent it, as they requested my A-level certificate, and I provided it immediately. And I haven't heard from them since. Do I need to send a follow-up email? Or is this the usual application processing time?

Also, The course I applied to is Mechanical Eng. If my application is successful and I get an offer, is it possible for me to ask to change the course to Mechatronics and Robotics? Both courses have the same academic requirements, would this be something they accept to do? Or would I need to apply for the course and for them to evaluate everything again?

Why would you wait until your "my application is successful and I get an offer" to tell them you actually want to apply for a different course instead? They would, at that point, have to revaluate your application. It may be, for example, that they have spaces available for Mechanical Engineering, but not for Mechatronics and Robotics. Or it may be that your application for Mechanical Engineering is unsuccessful due to lack of available places, but if you'd applied for Mechatronics and Robotics, you'd have been fine. It's not simply a matter of the two subjects having the same academic requirements, so if you're accepted/rejected for one, it would automatically be the same result for the other.

So, if you're sure you want to switch courses, contact them now and tell them. If it's more a case of you'd prefer Mechatronics and Robotics, but you'd be happy enough with Mechanical Engineering, then that's much more tricky. In that situation, I'd probably send them a polite "chaser" email asking them to confirm receipt of the documents provided and asking when they might be in a position to make a decision.

You can then make a decision as to what you'd rather do based on their response. If the say no, you can immediately apply via Extra for Mechatronics and Robotics.

As above - contact them now - this is when they will be calculating offer vs Firm numbers for any early Clearing, and you could miss the bus if you wait any longer.
