Should I still apply for dentistry with a 2:1?

After working really hard this year, my second-year grades have dropped my first down to a 2:1, which i think has ruined my chances of dental school. I graduate this summer in Biomedical sciences, and I'm taking a gap year to resit my A levels (Bio+Chem) as my uni of interest is UCLAN.

I've just booked my UCAT and I'm starting to think that it's pointless.

I'm aware that 2:1 is the entry requirement, but something tells me that it's ruined my chances and will lead to an instant rejection.

I graduate this summer in Biomedical sciences, and I'm taking a gap year to resit my A levels (Bio+Chem) as my uni of interest is UCLAN. I have 2 radiology and cardiology work exp and 3 dental work exp. I'm currently volunteering at a hospital and have prior volunteering exp with a dental charity. I've worked 6 retail jobs and I'm currently working 2 jobs to afford my college fees. I have decent GCSES: 6,6,7-6,6 for English, maths, double science and Spanish as well as 8,8,8 in sociology, art and history.

I've just booked my UCAT and I'm starting to think that it's pointless.

I'm aware that 2:1 is the entry requirement, but something tells me that it's ruined my chances and will lead to an instant rejection.

If it was an instant rejection they would just ask for a 1st.

They wouldn't waste their own time soliciting a lot of applications from people who were underqualified.

Could you link to the specific course you are looking at? I'm trying to work out whether retaking your AL would be necessary. Most of their postgrad dentistry programmes look like CPD type courses.

Dental Surgery? Without clicking through on every course I don't know which ones are 4 years.

Hi there,

Firstly, congratulations on finishing your degree - you should be really proud of yourself! It's great to hear you're interested in studying BDS Dental Surgery with us.

Don't panic about feeling like you will miss out on the chances of studying with us, our entry requirements only specify a 2:1 Degree in a Biomedical discipline plus 3 A Levels at Grade C or above at least 2 must be from Biology or Physics or Chemistry or Mathematics. As you have mentioned, if you graduate with a 2:1 degree and the suitable A-Levels you will be eligible for the BDS Dental Surgery course. You will not be instantly rejected so don't let this deter you!

My advice now would be to concentrate on your UCAT, and focus on achieving the best result! You will have as much of a chance as any other applicant that meets the entry requirements so try not to think negatively.

If you have anymore questions, please do let me know.
Hope this helps, ^Hannah 🙂
