A levels gone badly

I initially had an offer for engineering of ABC or BBB but after how bad the papers went, i think ill get a BCD or praying i get ACD somehow. I don't think i'll get into my firm or insurance now or any engineering course now cause my physics grade is a D, and I can't take a gap year. I thought about doing economics and finance at southamtpon through clearing and heard they can take BCC, but im still one grade off. Since I have an B (possibly A) in maths, do you think they'd still give me an offer even though i get a D in physics? Because physics would not be related to the course at all. Thanks

I would point out that all of this is speculation - you're writing it as if you know you got a D at physics. Students are notoriously bad at assessing how well they did at exams, so I wouldn't be so fatalistic about it - though thinking through worst-case options is obviously sensible if you have a very definite feeling that the exams didn't go hugely well.

Hello there!

Thanks for reaching out and I'm sorry to hear you're feeling anxious at the moment. Rest assured this is perfectly normal and whatever happens, you have plenty of options:

1.

You may still get into your firm or insurance - you may have not done as 'badly' as you think you have 🙂

2.

You could apply for Econ and Finance at Southampton (or anywhere else you like the look of and meet the requirements for) though clearing

3.

You could still get into an engineering course through clearing. You'd just have to be selective about which unis you went for. Have you considered looking at unis who take UCAS tariff points rather than individual grades? (example from UCLan) Or have you considered looking at courses in Engineering with a foundation year? (example from Brunel)

I hope some of this helps but if you have any questions please add them to the thread.

Best of luck!

Yh you might be right, cosdering the mistakes in OCR papers the garde boundaries might be lowered so i could have done better than i thouhgt. Thank you

Thank you for the advice! In general, do you know how lenient universities tend to be when accpeting offer, either through clearing or already firmed? Would 1 or 2 grades below be okay or is that a stretch?

Hi again Anon,

Each year in most cases the unis you put as your firms will look at those who narrowly missed their offers and may be able to accept them if there is room on the course, but this varies year on year and is by no means guaranteed. Usually near miss = 1 grade below the offer, but this again will vary uni to uni. Through clearing the required grades tend to be the same as the original course but this is again something you'd have to check on the university's website when clearing opens.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Ngl if you got BCD you’d deffo get rejected I’m sorry both unis have a reputation for rejecting people even if they r near misses esp Manchester and Exeter

Hi @Anonymous2246, results day in August is a long way away and the wait can be an anxious time, so I hope you're feeling okay right now, and that you'll feel less anxious as you get closer to going to uni in September 🙂

I have to agree with the advice you've been given here. You don't know what you did achieve yet, but I think it's great that you're exploring other avenues while you wait for your results. As UniofBath said, you have lots of options and eventualities which are still on the cards, including going to your firm or insurance choice, or applying through Clearing.

For Southampton, make sure you sign up for the Pre-Clearing registration here: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/clearing to get updates about our Clearing offering and webinars around Clearing. Other universities will have this as well, I'm sure, which might help you plan ahead if needed.

Wishing you all the best of luck with everything, and please let us know if you have any questions! Always here and happy to help 😀

Hey!

Really understand how stressful this all feels, especially when you're waiting on results and things didn’t go as planned.

It’s definitely true that economics and finance courses usually focus more on subjects like maths rather than physics, so the fact that you’re predicted or already have a strong grade in maths (B or even A) will work in your favour. Unis do look at your overall profile, not just your grades in isolation, especially during Clearing.

Southampton, like many universities, can sometimes be flexible in Clearing if they really like the rest of your application and you meet most of the requirements. Since you’ve done maths and are showing interest in a course that's not related to physics, they might still consider you, even if you’re technically one grade off.

You could call them on results day, speak to the admissions team for the course you’re interested in and explain your grades, including the strong maths. Ask if they’d still consider you for a place?

Also be ready to explain why you're interested in Economics and Finance, maybe mention any relevant experience, your strengths in maths, or what draws you to the course etc

Also keep a few other backup options in mind too, some unis might be more flexible, and having a list ready can help reduce the pressure on the day.

Even if you’re one grade off, it’s definitely still worth trying. People do get in during Clearing every year in situations just like yours 🙂

All the best!

Also, what's going on with it being this year or never (can't take a gap year)?

I have seen info & figures for clearing recruitment Southampton ...the good news is on exam results day they had 300+ courses listed as having places (the high number was due to a large number of combined courses on the list) They recruited over 600 UK clearing applicants and Econ & Finance was included on the list of courses with places. But for this course the university was initially looking for applicants with AAB grades ..its possible that later the entry requirements may have been lowered, depending on how successful the univ was able to recruit students with these high grades
