What are my options?

Today I received my results for the end of my second year at BSc (Level 5). Despite failing one module (at L5) which I was aware of, I was confident that I’d passed this year and my studies would resume to my last year. However, to my surprise, I was told my studies were terminated due to the fact I’d trailed a module in the first year (L4). Unaware to me, I was told I was supposed to re-attempt the assignment I’d failed in the first year during this year, and given the fact I’d missed this year's reassessment point my academic studies were to be terminated in accordance with Academic Conduct. This was unclear to me as no member of staff from said module contacted me to state I needed to do so, nor was I scheduled any lectures or seminars prior to the reassessment. Despite passing L5 and demonstrating being able to proceed to final year, my studies have been terminated due to missing the reassessment point for a first year module (which doesn’t actually contribute to my degree?). Acknowledging this is perhaps a result of my naivety and accepting some responsibility, do I have any grounds to appeal this decision? And is there anything I can do to resume my studies at final year without resitting the first year module? Even if it means transferring to a different university under mitigating circumstances. What are my options?

It sounds like passing the module is a mandatory requirement, therefore required for progression to final year.

Realistically I would gather up all the communications, including going back to first year and reviewing the outcome of the exam board, it should have been made clear to you when you received the formal end of year results, and your tutor should have touched base with you on this.

If this didn’t happen you certainly do have grounds to appeal. If they did explain it & you didn’t review the communications you are in much tougher waters… I certainly would go back to both your tutor & your students union.

In terms of moving institution, with multiple failed modules & technically no completed levels fully passed I suspect enrolling at a new university might mean restarting from first year, and your options of university would be very limited. You might find the open university willing to accept a lot more of your credits.

Hi @jovial-mitten

I'm really sorry to hear about your results. Whilst I don't know about your specific university's appeals procedures, as well as approaching your tutor, could you speak to your university's students union advice team? The SU are independent from the university and work to support students in every aspect of university life. The advisers will be able to not only give you advice, but will support you and help you navigate through the next steps you can take. I'm sure that the SU will be able to help you,

I really hope that you manage to appeal this successfully and have a positive outcome,
