Master's loan eligibility for non-British

Hello.

I am on a 5 year family visa route at the moment, by December 2025 I will have lived 3 years in the UK. My spouse is applying for a British citizenship and he is settled in the UK as well.

I wonder if I will be eligible for a masters loan for Januaty-2026-start master's course and September -2026-start courses?

This is going to be my first student finance application.

Thank you for your help!

Hi there, what is your status in the UK? And if you don't have settled status when do you expect to receive this? Thanks, Jason

Hi Stephen, thank you for your reply. I'm from Iran, my spouse from EU, settled in the UK and in process of applying for UK citizenship.

Hi again, you may be eligible to apply under the Spouse of an EU national route for to receive Postgraduate support. I would advise however, if you choose the September 26 start date to check the eligibility with us again around the launch of the postgraduate application for the new academic year (as the information is subject to change). Stephen.

Hi Stephen, thank you again for getting back to me.

Is there a way to find out what are the chances of getting the student loan under Spouse of an EU national route? Also would it be different if my spouse becomes a British national? I just need a bit more certainty to have plans in place. Thank you very much!

Hi there,

Just to say, the 2025/26 applications are available now, and these cover courses beginning in January 2026.

So, it may be worth applying now, even if you don't have a confirmed place yet.

That way, we can tell you for sure if you're eligible.

Thanks, Graeme

Hi Graeme, thank you for your reply.
Would I be able to see my eligibility for Jan 2026 even though I have not completed the 3-year residency requirement? I will meet the requirement by Dec 2025.

Hi shyfox,

Yes you apply prior to that however the application may be pended for your residency evidence until this is received. If that would be the only evidence outstanding at that time and you know that you will be eligible from that time, the rest of your eligibility would be confirmed.

Thanks, Clare
