"I switched during Clearing and never looked back"

Last year, Sophie came to our June Open Day after smashing her A-Levels. She realised her original choice wasn’t the right fit anymore.

She applied through Clearing and now she’s thriving 🌺

It’s OK to change direction

Could that be you? 👋

🚨 UCAS Early Clearing is now OPEN! 🚨

But what does that mean? Early Clearing allows those who already have their results to apply for a course. Maybe you took a gap year. Maybe you’re a mature student looking to get back into studying. If so, now could be the time to apply!

Firstly, you’ll need to search for an available course that’s right for your goals. Take your time and think about all your options.

TOP TIP: Most courses offer optional modules. This is a great way to tailor a course to suit your passions and career goals, so we advise checking those carefully.

Have you heard any other tips? Share them below!

Found your ideal course? Next steps.

When you find a course you like, it’s quick, easy and pressure-free to apply. This will differ university to university, so make sure you check how you apply before you submit anything.

At Nottingham, all you need to do is:

UK students (early clearing form now closed but the main one is open: Clearing form)

International students International Clearing application form.

And that’s it! Pretty simple, right?

Early Clearing can be a chance to take control and find a path that works for you. And remember: whatever your next step is, you've got this!

Drop us a message in the comments and let us know who you are and what you're here for!

🤔 Have you been through Clearing before and want to share your experience or advice?

🤔 Are you a parent, carer or someone supporting a student through Clearing and want to ask questions too?

🤔 Are you a student uncertain about your next steps? Let’s keep the conversation going, we’re here to help where we can.

Hi 👋, the best place to keep up to date with the courses that are in clearing is on our dedicated clearing pages - Keep checking!

If Law doesn't go in to clearing this year for @Uni of Notts have you thought about taking a gap year and applying for next year?

💜 Clearing stories from students who have BEEN THERE 💜

Hearing from other people who have been through a similar experience to you is a great way to feel prepared.
We heard from four of our fantastic students who have been through Clearing. Here are their stories...

Edward watch the full interview here 🎥
“After I changed my mind about my firm choice, Clearing was instrumental in helping me get to the university I really wanted.
“The idea [of Clearing] was relatively stressful. When I actually went through the process, it wasn't nearly as daunting or scary as it seemed.
“I was thinking about gap years, working for a year, or going to my first choice anyway despite me not wanting to. Clearing was definitely the right option for me.”

Charlotte watch the full video here 🎥
“I had UoN as one of my five offers originally, but then I didn’t choose it. Then I missed both my [firm choice] and back-up offer.
I was crying on Results Day for hours. My teachers gave me a list of university phone numbers... and my parents helped me call them.
Clearing was something I hadn’t even considered, but looking back now I feel so lucky to have got into Notts. I don’t want to go home for the summer!
Even if it's not what you expected or wanted, there’s always good things for you to unlock. It’s kind of in the hands of fate but that’s okay. All you can do is phone people and research and be prepared. I know that you’ve got this!”

Ashley watch the full video here 🎥
I didn’t get the grades that I needed. I rang a few unis and searched for what courses would be equivalent to the one that I originally wanted.
Emotionally, at the beginning, it was quite difficult not knowing where I was going. But throughout the two hours that I was ringing up and I was researching areas, courses and locations, it got a lot easier to refine where I wanted to go.”

Aarya watch the full video here 🎥
“I missed out on both my firm and insurance choices, but Clearing helped me find the right course at the right uni, in the one place I thought I’d never stay home.
Nottingham is my hometown, so I knew the campus was beautiful and, if I stayed, I’d be close to my family. I also researched the modules before Results Day, so I knew the course would be something I’d want to study.
At the time it was quite stressful, but I can confidently say now that I don't regret my decision in coming here. I learned Mandarin and in my first year I was able to go on a Spring camp to China, which I wouldn’t have been able to do if I didn’t come here.”

We’d love to hear stories from more students who have been though Clearing, too! What was your experience like?

🦄 Clearing myth-busters 🦄

Results Day is coming and, as usual, there are lots of questions flying around about Clearing. There are also a lot of MYTHS about Clearing, too.

We thought we’d share some common myths and misconceptions and bust them for you! Here are some we’ve heard over the years:

I think I’ve performed better in my exams than I expected. But I have to stick to my firm choice, right?
Well done! You are allowed to switch your choice through Clearing if you have higher grades than were predicted. Go get ‘em!

I’m in Clearing. This must mean I’ve fallen behind...
Absolutely NOT! If you’re in Clearing because things didn’t go to plan, that’s okay and totally normal. That’s a big reason why Clearing exists to give you options and help you take back control. Remember lots of people get into university through Clearing. It’s a positive thing.

I have done more research and changed my mind on where I want to go, but that’s not what Clearing is for, is it?
Yes it is! You are allowed to change your mind on which university you study at and which course you apply for and Clearing gives you the opportunity to do that.

There won’t be any accommodation left. Where will I live?
Every year we do our best to ensure an accommodation guarantee for students applying through Clearing. In fact, many universities will do this if they can, so no need to worry.

I got rejected by a university, so I can’t apply to the same place through Clearing, can I?
Actually, yes! If a university is offering a course in Clearing that you meet the entry requirements for, you can apply. It won't matter if you have been rejected from that uni before. The people processing your new application won’t know that, or ask about it.

If I’m offered a place through Clearing, I won’t have much time to think about it.
Yes, you will. Universities will give you some time to think about an offer, so you can take a breath and make a calm decision. This also gives you time to find out more about the subject, the campus, student societies and more.

What if I’m upset on the phone to the hotline?
That’s fine. Everyone answering the phones understands how stressful Clearing can be and you have our full permission to cry through the entire phone call. We’ll take some deep breaths with you and we’ll walk you through it all. Don’t worry!

Heard something about Clearing that you’re not sure about? If you have concerns or questions, let’s talk about them and see if we can myth-bust those too...

Thank you for your feedback Tito - We are glad you enjoyed! 😄

Hi! You can take a look at the Clearing Page to see what the requirements are in early clearing, but these can change when clearing goes live fully after the A-Level Results release do keep checking back and seeing what we ask for!

Our usual requirements only ask for Computer Science if you have studied it, so if you don't get an A it isn't the end of the world. Do check online and reach out on Results Day once you have your final results and we can let you know if we can make an offer.

Good luck! I am sure you did great 😁
All the best,

Hey!

If you’re feeling a bit unsure about how Clearing works you’re definitely not alone. There’s loads of info out there, but you don’t need to figure it all out by yourself.

Lots of unis (including us!) are running online info events to help explain Clearing what it is, how it works, and what to expect on results day. You’ll also get the chance to ask questions and hear directly from the experts.

📅 Sign up for our Clearing event on 7 August we’ll break it all down for you.

Results day can feel overwhelming, but support really makes a difference whether it’s from friends, family, teachers or even other students who’ve been there before. And we’re here for you too.

🏆 You're taking control of your next steps and that’s something to be proud of. 🏆

Results Day SURVIVAL GUIDE

Knowing how to navigate Results Day and understanding the options available to you ahead of time will help you feel prepared, calm and in control.

Here are our checklists for the day: one for if you are changing plan and going through Clearing, and one for people who have got their first choice.

What would you add to the survival guide? Comment below!

I’m going through Clearing to find a different course:

1. ☀️🍵 Rise and shine You can log in to UCAS at 8am on Results Day to see your offers. The next step will depend on your results and the offers you receive. Have something healthy to eat and drink if you can it will help you focus.

2. 🤔💡Explore new horizons with Clearing Didn’t get your first choice? Want to change your mind about a course or uni? No worries! It happens to lots of people, so you are not alone. Dive into Clearing and find your new path in the courses that are available. Take your time you do not need to rush your decision. Many courses share the same optional modules, and you may be surprised by the variety on offer. You’ve got this!

3. 🔎💰Explore finance and funding Funding your studies is crucial. If you change your course or university through Clearing, you need to update your student finance application as soon as possible. If you live outside of England, you'll need to contact the relevant funding body. University websites and UCAS will have further guidance on this.

I got my offer:

1. ☀️🍵 Rise and shine You can log in to UCAS at 8am on Results Day to see your offers. Have something healthy to eat and drink if you can it will help you focus.

2. 🎉 🎉 Celebrate your first choice If you've secured an offer from your first-choice university, congratulations! Follow the instructions to confirm your place and get ready to embark on an exciting journey.

3. 🔎💰Explore finance and funding Double check that your Student Finance application is up to date and any changes to your course or location of study are submitted to your relevant funding body. University websites and UCAS will have further guidance on this.

4. 🏡 🏡 Secure your accommodation
Your university will send you information about accommodation options, and you can contact them if you are unsure.

I’ve decided I want to pursue English at uni as it’s my passion and uni of Nottingham has always caught my eye cus it’s close to home and I loved the open days and modules for the English and French course and the classics and English course. I got BCC with a B in English Lit and A in EPQ. I thought I met the entry requirements but I keep getting rejected 😔. Is this happening to anyone else!

Hello! It might feel like there’s pressure on your shoulders to understand Clearing inside and out. There is LOTS of info out there, but don’t worry you don’t need to spend hours researching it all yourself...

Many universities will be running online information events about the Clearing process, including things like what Clearing actually is, what to expect and how to prepare. Usually, you’ll also be able to ask questions to specific teams.

📅 Sign up to our event here! Which is taking place on the 7th of August.

There can be a lot to think about and ‘do’ on results day, and we often hear students say that the support they got from parents, guardians, teachers or friends was a huge help!

🏆 You are doing something amazing by helping someone through this journey 🏆

Have you been ‘the supporter’ for someone through Clearing before? Let’s get the conversation going... 👇
