Staying Calm Before Results Day: Self-Care and Wellbeing Tips

Hey everyone, 👋 the Student Reps and Official Reps have brough our creative skills together to help support future students, we hope this helps.

With results day creeping up fast, we know the nerves can start to kick in. Whether you're feeling excited, stressed, or just trying not to think about it you're not alone. We teamed up with some student ambassadors to pull together a few helpful ways to stay chill in the run-up to the big day.
Let’s get into it 👇

🧘 1. Try Mindfulness

Even just taking 5 minutes to sit quietly, breathe deeply, or focus on the present moment can really help when anxiety hits. Apps like Headspace or Calm are a good shout, but even closing your eyes and counting your breaths can do the trick.

🏃*♀️ 2. Move Your Body

You don’t need to be smashing out a gym sesh a quick walk, stretching, or even a bit of dancing in your room to your favorite tunes can boost your mood. Moving your body = moving that stress out.

😴 3. Get Some Sleep

Easier said than done but sleep really does help your brain process stress better. Try to keep a decent sleep routine (yes, that means not staying up on TikTok till 3am every night).

🥗 4. Fuel Yourself Right

Snacks are life but try to balance them out with actual meals too. Your brain needs proper fuel think fruit, veg, wholegrains you’ll feel way more stable and focused.

🗣️ 5. Talk to Someone

Bottling things up? Not helpful. Chat to a mate, sibling, or anyone you trust. You’d be surprised how much better you feel after getting it off your chest.

🎉 6. Plan Something Fun
Give yourself something non-results-related to look forward to. Whether it’s a day out, a takeaway, or binging your fave show, having something planned can help distract your brain from the stress spiral.

📱 7. Step Away from Socials

Easier said than done, but constantly seeing posts about results day? Not the vibe. It’s okay to mute, log off, or take a break if it’s messing with your head.

💛 8. Do a Gratitude Check

Sounds cheesy but hear us out jotting down 3 things you're grateful for each day can help shift your focus away from worry. Even small stuff counts (like a good cup of tea or finally finishing that Netflix series).

Little Things That Help:

Relaxing Playlist: Put on some chill music to help your brain slow down
Journaling: Dump your thoughts onto paper to stop them spinning around in your head
Breathing Exercises: Try the 4-7-8 technique (breathe in for 4, hold for 7, out for 8)😎
Drink Water: Hydration = clearer thinking and better vibes

💬 Your Turn What’s your go-to way to chill when things get a bit much? Drop your tips below let’s help each other get through results season 💙

💜 Clearing stories from students who have BEEN THERE 💜

Hearing from other people who have been through a similar experience to you is a great way to feel prepared.
We heard from four of our fantastic students who have been through Clearing. Here are their stories...

Edward watch the full interview here 🎥

“After I changed my mind about my firm choice, Clearing was instrumental in helping me get to the university I really wanted. “The idea [of Clearing] was relatively stressful. When I actually went through the process, it wasn't nearly as daunting or scary as it seemed. “I was thinking about gap years, working for a year, or going to my first choice anyway despite me not wanting to. Clearing was definitely the right option for me.”

Charlotte watch the full video here 🎥
“I had UoN as one of my five offers originally, but then I didn’t choose it. Then I missed both my [firm choice] and back-up offer. I was crying on Results Day for hours. My teachers gave me a list of university phone numbers... and my parents helped me call them. Clearing was something I hadn’t even considered, but looking back now I feel so lucky to have got into Notts. I don’t want to go home for the summer! Even if it's not what you expected or wanted, there are always good things for you to unlock. It’s kind of in the hands of fate but that’s okay. All you can do is phone people, research, and be prepared. I know that you’ve got this!”

Ashley watch the full video here 🎥
I didn’t get the grades that I needed. I rang a few unis and searched for what courses would be equivalent to the one that I originally wanted. Emotionally, at the beginning, it was quite difficult not knowing where I was going. But throughout the two hours that I was ringing up and researching areas, courses and locations, it got a lot easier to refine where I wanted to go.”

Aarya watch the full video here 🎥
“I missed out on both my firm and insurance choices, but Clearing helped me find the right course at the right uni, in the one place I thought I’d never stay home. Nottingham is my hometown, so I knew the campus was beautiful and, if I stayed, I’d be close to my family. I also researched the modules before Results Day, so I knew the course would be something I’d want to study. At the time, it was quite stressful, but I can confidently say now that I don't regret my decision in coming here. I learned Mandarin and in my first year I was able to go on a Spring camp to China, which I wouldn’t have been able to do if I didn’t come here.”

We’d love to hear stories from more students who have been through Clearing, too! What was your experience like?

🌟 Results Day Game Plan: Your Guide to Success

Results Day is your moment to take the next exciting step in your journey. Whether you’ve secured your first choice or are exploring new opportunities through Clearing, knowing what to expect can help you feel confident and in control.

We are supporting the #BeResultsProud campaign here on TSR celebrating every achievement, every pathway, and every success story. Clearing isn’t just a fallback; it’s a chance to discover courses, universities, and experiences you might not have considered before.

We’ve put together two easy checklists: one for if you’re changing plans and going through Clearing, and one for if you’ve got your first choice. Whatever your path, this is your day to explore, decide, and start your next chapter and remember, there are plenty of routes to your perfect course and university.

I’m going through Clearing to find a different course:

1.

☀️🍵 Rise and shine You can log in to UCAS at 8am on Results Day to see your offers. The next step will depend on your results and the offers you receive. Have something healthy to eat and drink if you can it will help you focus.

2.

🤔💡Explore new horizons with Clearing. Didn’t get your first choice? Want to change your mind about a course or uni? No worries! It happens to lots of people, so you are not alone. Dive into Clearing to discover your new path through the available courses. Take your time you do not need to rush your decision. Many courses share the same optional modules, and you may be surprised by the variety on offer. You’ve got this!

3.

🔎💰Explore finance and funding. Funding your studies is crucial. If you change your course or university through Clearing, you need to update your student finance application as soon as possible. If you live outside of England, you'll need to contact the relevant funding body. University websites and UCAS will have further guidance on this.

I got my offer:

1.

☀️🍵 Rise and shine you can log in to UCAS at 8 am on Results Day to see your offers. Have something healthy to eat and drink if you can it will help you focus.

2.

🎉 🎉 Celebrate your first choice: If you've secured an offer from your first-choice university, congratulations! Follow the instructions to confirm your place and get ready to embark on an exciting journey.

3.

🔎💰Explore finance and funding: Double-check that your Student Finance application is up to date and any changes to your course or location of study are submitted to your relevant funding body. University websites and UCAS will have further guidance on this.

4.

🏡 🏡 Secure your accommodation: Your university will send you information about accommodation options, and you can contact them if you are unsure.

I’ve decided I want to pursue English at uni as it’s my passion and uni of Nottingham has always caught my eye cus it’s close to home and I loved the open days and modules for the English and French course and the classics and English course. I got BCC with a B in English Lit and A in EPQ. I thought I met the entry requirements but I keep getting rejected 😔. Is this happening to anyone else!

Hi, I'm sorry to hear of your disappointments. If you would like to email in, we can look at your individual situation and maybe shed some light to this and maybe offer a way forward. Please use this enquiry form, we look forward to hearing from you 🙂 Karen UoN

I’ve already got my A level results from last year so I applied for archaeology this year and got accepted with a foundation year( I’ve accepted this offer ) but I want to see if I can get into the course without a foundation year through clearing. Is that something I can do ??? And I’m assuming I’ll have to call the uni to be released and then create a clearing account to apply. Can this be done through the unis clearing hotlines or will I have to contact some other part of the the uni

📢 Clearing is now open You've got this!

Once you’ve found a course in Clearing that interests you and you’ve checked that you meet the entry requirements, get ready to make your application: application form. Don’t rush your decision. Take your time, and if you can, ask others around you for support.

If you're a UK student, apply here: application form.
If you're an International student: International Clearing Form

Remember, Clearing is an opportunity:

You can use it to change your mind about a course or the university you’d originally chosen.
You can apply through Clearing after taking a gap year or time out of education.
You can use it to find alternative courses if you haven’t met the required grades for your first choice.

Ready to explore your options? Universities will have their Clearing course lists available to browse and apply for now.

Need support on how to apply?
This will vary depending on the university and if you’re holding an offer or not. We can offer Clearing application support via our webpages or you can comment below, and we’ll get back to you.

Here are some words of wisdom from current student Aarya, who has been through Clearing:

“The main thing to remember is that even though, on the day, it might feel like everything has gone wrong, Clearing is an opportunity to take a path that you’ve not considered before.

It’s entirely possible that you’ll end up loving a different course, a different university. If you’re worried about Clearing, don’t worry you’ve got this.”

We want to hear about your Results Day!
Comment below and let us know how it's all going did you change your mind and land a dream course in Clearing? Or did you get your grades and have your first choice secured? Let’s share!

Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for students receiving their final results today? Share them below, too!

💛 Supporting a Friend on Results Day: What You Can Do 💛

Hey everyone 👋

Results Day can bring a lot of mixed emotions. While you might be celebrating, you might also have a friend who didn’t get the grades they were hoping for.

Here are a few gentle ways to be there for someone who might be struggling:

1. Listen First, Talk Later 🧏
Sometimes the best support is just being there. Let them talk if they want to—but don’t rush in with advice straight away.

2. Don’t Downplay Their Feelings 😔
Phrases like “you’ll be fine!” or “it doesn’t matter” can feel dismissive, even if they’re meant kindly. Try saying “I’m really sorry, that must feel tough—do you want to talk about it?”

3. Offer to Help Them Explore Options 💬
Clearing can feel overwhelming, so offer to sit with them, look through their choices, or just make a cuppa while they call the helpline.

4. Avoid Public Posts or Pressure 📱
Try not to post about results if you know your friend is upset. Some people need space and time before they’re ready to share.

5. Check In Later Too 🧡
It might be a few days before things settle down. A kind message later in the week could mean a lot.

Clearing 2025 is STILL OPEN

Are you still weighing up your options in Clearing? Many universities still have places available on a variety of courses, so you have time to decide your next step.

“Two years ago, I went through Clearing for the first time. I rushed into a decision that wasn’t the best and I regretted it for a year. Then I went through Clearing again the following year and I definitely didn’t rush into making a decision. That helped a lot in getting me to the right place.” Ashley. Microbiology student at UoN.

Have you been through Clearing more than once, too? Everyone’s experience is unique. We’d love to hear yours, let's talk about it...

🤔 Considering starting university this September? 🤔

You can apply for available courses at several universities. At Nottingham, we have many exciting courses with places available through Clearing. Check out our available courses. So, there is still time for you to make your decision. Once you have chosen a course you like and confirmed that you meet the entry requirements, call us on 0330 041 5590 (open from 9 am on 15/08/25) or submit your application via the online application form: application form

I would like to apply for a Mathematics course at Uni of Nottingham, but it says there are no places for the UK students right now in Clearing. Will it be possible for a place to appear later so I can apply? Earlier this year I got an offer from this course, but declined it, maybe it will still be possible to be considered? My grades are A*AA in Maths, Further Maths and Physics. Or maybe is it possible to be put in some kind of waiting list, or somehow else to be informed when a place will appear?

Also, how likely it is for a place to appear, for example, comparing to previous years?

Hi @BalansoDuMar !

Currently the uni is not accepting clearing applications for the Mathematics BSc Hons course from UK students.

If you're specifically interested in the Mathematics BSc Hons course, it's advisable to monitor the University of Nottingham's Clearing page for any updates on availability. While they do not maintain a waiting list, places may become available later in the Clearing process, though it is not a guarantee. Given your A*AA grades in Maths, Further Maths, and Physics, you do meet the entry requirements for this course. Additionally, since you previously received an offer for this course, you might want to contact the university directly to discuss your situation. They may be able to provide guidance or consider your application on a case-by-case basis.

You can call the Clearing hotline at 0330 0415590/+44 (0) 115 951 5559.
Here are the call timings:

Friday 15 August: 9am–5pm

Saturday 16 August: 10am–3pm

Sunday 17 August: 10am–3pm

Thank you very much for advice. How may I able to contact the Uni directly? Is there a separate email or contact number? I called Clearing, and they confirmed that even that I applied for this course earlier, they are not able to discuss my application with me on case-by-case basis.
