Compelling Personal Reasons Guide From Someone Whin Got Accepted

Hey guys! I hope you don’t mind but noticed there isn’t a guide for people whom wanting to get compelling personal reasons (CPR) especially due to mental health. I found I had no help doing mine from this forum but did from Reddit and I wanted to ensure other people can also get help when applying.

A backstory with mine is that I ended up not attending university due to numerous mental health conditions that was not diagnosed at the time, including depression and anxiety. I already attended once before but also quit due to the age I was at the time (being 18 and not going to uni straight away is also ok as I found out now I’m older).

So these are the things that I found helpful when submitting my CPR:

- Submit as much evidence as possible: I had letters from GP, my old uni, support workers and a psychiatrist. When I thought that wasn’t much, I asked my GP for old letters they wrote for when I attended them during uni for depression. I believe this really helped.

- It took a total of 2 weeks for all my evidence to be accepted and looked at. It was advised 12 working days on the SLC website. But add a bit extra on since usually go over the deadline.

- I didn’t sleep, I ate into my feelings and was really worried about getting accepted. Harder said than done but try not to worry. Student Finance WANTS TO HELP YOU so if not enough evidence they will tell you to resubmit and tell you what they are looking for.

- It’s a case by case basis. I know someone whom got accepted with one uni letter and a letter from the GP, so this is possible but I wanted to ensure I got accepted the first time since caused a lot of stress, hence loads of evidence I had.

- Once they made their decision, they will email you. Please check your junk since Hotmail / outlook seem to put a lot of important emails there.

- Contact your new uni for support. I am going to be attending NTU and they have been absolutely fantastic. They said I was really organised and to get support sorted with them as early as possible so that they can help provide the best support available.

- Apply also for DSA. You might think “oh it’s only depression” “oh it’s only anxiety” but from someone whom has attended university twice in the past, I know now how much havoc it can cause. My health advisor has also been amazing and has provided me with mental health support and life skills support as well as a standard laptop for my studies (do have to pay £200 towards).

I hope this helps and any questions, please ask and I will try and answer. I hope this helps some people.
