Advice for an unemployed CS Grad

Hi,

I recently graduated with a degree in Computer Science from a Russell Group university and have been struggling to land a job. I completed a placement year and have several solid projects, which usually get me through to the interview stage.

The problem is, I'm not sure how long it will take to actually secure a role. Would it be worth taking any job (e.g. retail or part-time work) while I continue applying and preparing for interviews? I'm concerned that having a large gap after graduation might raise questions with employers.

Or would it be better to dedicate all my time to interview prep and LeetCode until I land something?

Any job is better than no job. Getting a job to 'tide you over' (so to speak) shows pragmatism, realism and a work ethic - these are qualities you want to demonstrate. It's quite possible to do a job and prepare for 'real' job interviews: they're not mutually exclusive. Above all, taking a 'crap' job whilst simultaneously looking for your 'real' job shows a lack of entitlement and a mature view of the world, which all employers will be looking for.

If you're getting to the interview stage, that's good. Speaking from the inside, hiring has been very slow, so if you're getting past the first hurdle, a little more LC and continued interview practice should be all you need to eventually crack it

Like Reality Check says, there are many pros to getting another job to bridge the gap. Although it will of course be additional effort on your part, it's definitely doable
