Are contextual offers available for me?

Hi! I’m a year 12 and would look to study at KCL.

During year 11, I experienced difficulties mentally and spent 4 months of the academic year in hospital, and a further month on bed rest as advised by my care workers.
Is a contextual offer at a college like KCL possible? Or would it not be achievable as the illness affected my attendance during year 11 instead of 12?

Contextual offers are based on your socioeconomic background. What you’re describing is extenuating circumstances. If your extenuating circumstances impacted your academic performance during your GCSEs, this may be something taken into consideration by KCL, depending on the course and the entry requirements. However, if you are trying to get consideration for your A level performance (i.e. predicted grades), hospitalisation in Year 11 likely would not be relevant, as it has not impacted your academic performance during A levels.

As above, this is extenuating circumstances - your school/college needs to explain the issues you have had, and the impact on your studies, in the UCAS reference. Many Unis will also want an also a specific form completed with more details - check on each Uni website. Example - Extenuating circumstances | Study at Bristol | University of Bristol

I'd also recommend that you apply for deferred entry to give yourself an extra year to get well. 'Going to Uni' is demanding, and you need to be able to get the most out of it to succeed. Don't try and do it while you are still unwell / tired / recovering.
