literary theory books

ive read literary theory the basics by Hans bertens and really loved it. ive notice a lot of other similar books (beginning theory and literary theory an introduction) and wonder if they would be interesting or more of the same as bertens books. id also just love any other literary theory or philosophy like Derrida or Walter Benjamin or Simone de beavouir as well.

Hi @C0gg

Literary theory is what I'm focusing my PhD on, so I'm really really pleased that you like it so much too! There are loads of lit theory and psychoanalysis books available, though some are obviously better than others. Peter Barry's book is really great and very comprehensive, though again this is more of a broad brush of lit theory as it covers everything. One that is excellent and uses the actual theorists more is The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism. Do you have a reading list for your university? Have you tried reading the texts on this? Is there a specific field of lit theory you particularly enjoy? If it is Benjamin, the Arcades Project is fascinating, but he also wrote art in the Age of the Machine, then there is Baudrillard on Simulacra and Simulacrum. If you find an area you especially enjoy, try looking in the bibliography of the broader theory books and you could then try going into the theorists' works themselves, once you know the overview. Lacan is my particular favourite!

Enjoy!
