What are your post-exam summer plans?

Hi everyone ,

Well done to everyone who has finished their exams this year! I remember feeling such relief at the end of the exam season to be finished and to have time to enjoy summer. However, you might now be wondering what you could be doing over summer to prepare for starting university this upcoming September.

One thing I spent my summer doing was making sure I was confident in all the basic life skills needed for living independently. This involved learning what the washing symbols meant on clothes, how to iron and complete a food shop on a budget that will last a week. These are just a few of the skills I took a bit of time to learn as well as working a part-time job and a bit of pre-reading.

There are many ways you might spend your summer in preparation but there are no set things you must be doing. Ultimately, you want to make the most of your post-exam summer!

For anyone starting university in September, what are your plans for summer? And anyone who is currently at university, how did you prepare for university, and do you have any advice for everyone starting in September?

Good luck to everyone planning on starting university in September!

Hi Eloise (:

the summer before I started university i spent working my job, hanging with friends & family and just in general recharging before university started!

got pretty similar plans this year, working a lot and spending time with friends & family + a few concerts lined up! 😊

Advice for everyone starting uni next September: have fun in summer!!, I know easier said than done but try not to stress too badly about uni!! - you want to enjoy your time off and have fun! - if you have anything your required to do eg registering for your couirse, pre-reading if necessary etc then space it all out so your not worrying last minute!!

Personally i registered for my course asap so that i knew that was all out of the way and then I just looked at a few of the upcoming lectures the week before so i knew what i was heading into! - remeber everyone starts uni from a different background so the first year is a lot of everybody getting comforable with the same level of study & material, dont stress if something doesnt entirely make sense on anything such as lectures your looking at beforehand! - once your there, there will be a chance for anything to be explained and there should always be someone you can contact if your a little unsure! 💜

A lovely thread! @EdgeHillStudent1

Over the summer before I started at BCU, I spent some time looking over what the uni had to offer outside of my course. I had a nosey at what societies were on offer and what I could join in September. This got me feeling more excited about starting in September. I also love to plan, so looking ahead helped settle some of my pre-uni nerves!

I also tried to find other students online who were starting at my uni or were in group chats for my accommodation. There's usually Facebook or WhatsApp groups starting this time of year for Fresher's to start making plans. I actually had the opportunity to meet one of my now closest friends as they lived really close to me, and we decided to meet up before uni started. This worked out really well as we both then had a familiar face when we arrived on campus. Now, if you plan to do something like this, make sure you're staying safe! And if meeting up in advance is not for you, then maybe just spend some time chatting online!

But most importantly, take some time to rest, see friends and family, and actually congratulate yourself on completing your exams!

All the best everyone! 🙂

Hi there!

This is a lovely idea so I thought I should join in!

This summer my plans are to relax, see friends and work! I try to work over the summer to save up for the year ahead at university as this just helps me to feel more relaxed about money while I am at Uni.

I also have a couple of holidays planned which I am super excited about. I've been on holiday with my course friends too which was so nice and great to do something to celebrate our Uni journey.

Here are some of my tips for people preparing to start uni in September and some things I did to prepare myself for uni:

Spend time with family and friends! It can be tempting to revise or look over your notes all the time, but you will relearn most things when you start uni so try to spend time relaxing with loved ones.

Slowly start to look for deals so that you can get your kitchen things and bedroom items cheaper! It is good to start looking now so that you can get the best deals you can, but only buy things that you have room to store!

Have a look on social media to see if you can meet any of your new flatmates. There will be groups on Facebook where you can talk to people who you might be living with next year and it is nice to get to know some people.

Think about whether you are going to look for a job when you start, and where you might look for this. Bar and restaurant work is good as this is usually evening and weekend work. Have a look if there are any campus jobs too as they are good, but you might not be able to do this until you start.

I hope some of this helps,

Hi there,

What a great idea!

I just wrapped up my fourth and final year at university, so I'm spending my summer traveling and seeing friends, with most of my time spent in the USA and Denmark. It feels like a well-deserved break!

My advice for others would be to enjoy the break. The university year can be tough, so take some time to do the things you like to do and relax. I enjoyed visiting family, taking up a new hobby, and catching up on all of the movies I missed. However, preparing for the new university year is key too. Many work during the summer to save up, volunteer, and gain experience. Completing the required readings and other preparation as soon as possible can be super helpful, as you can just take the rest of the summer to relax!

I hope this helps,

Hey @EdgeHillStudent1,

This is a great idea for a thread, Eloise!

I'm currently making the transition from finishing my BA course here at Kingston to starting my new MSc course (User Experience Design). I'm spending a lot of my summer this year doing some of the prep work for that, as well as trying to get some work experience in my new field.

Outside of my academic pursuits, I'm doing a bit of travelling (heading back to Malaysia for the first time in years!) and meeting with some of my friends who are returning from their year abroad.

For anyone starting university in September, I would recommend spending some time reading around your subject. Maybe your course leader has sent out a reading list, maybe not - no matter what, you can still try to engage with some of the major news/topics surrounding your field/subject before you begin.

Here's hoping everyone enjoys their summer! 🙂
