SFE Doctoral loan question 2025/26

Hello,

Could a representative from SFE please let me know the answer to this: I am starting my full-time PhD in September. I am intending to apply for the full doctoral loan in the next few days. The entire time myself and my supervisor planned a 3-year project, however I can see that on the application form the university has confirmed a 4-year PhD with SFE, which they advised me they cannot amend.

Am I able to request to receive the loan (for the year) in one go instead of three 33% instalments? It would be very helpful since it will be difficult to keep a full-time job whilst enrolled on the PhD, and unfortunately a part-time PhD really was not an option for me as I plan to move countries within 3-4 years (after my PhD).

I would appreciate an answer to this query if possible.

Thank you.

Hi there, as the payment schedule is set in line with each academic year's semester start date, we would not be able to amend the payment schedule. Students can however request an earlier payment if facing financial hardship, but this can only be requested via the financial hardship team and will be at their own discretion based on the student's circumstances. Stephen.
