Has anyone got any suggestions for psychology work experience?

I am starting work experience tomorrow (I’m in year 12) but realised that it isn’t at all relevant to psychology. I have done work experience in the army, which was significant, but thought about my UCAS application and realised that this work experience is kind of lame. I was going to do some extra work experience in the six weeks holidays so can I please have some ideas of what I could do? Thanks!

Psychology is an academic subject at uni so you don't need work experience for your UCAS application. On your personal statement you need to show your interest in your subject beyond the A level curriculum through additional reading, podcasts, MOOCs, etc., and then by reflecting on what you have learnt or found interesting. Have a look at the suggestions on Cambridge's website, which can apply to all unis:

Thank you for your response! I will have a look to your kindly attached resource. So are you suggesting that work experience isn’t valid for psychology? I was thinking of doing more work experience in the holidays to make my application more appealing…

You dont need w/ex for a Psych degree and no University will expect it - its an academic degree, not a practical Psychiatric degree like Mental Health Nursing.

Clinical work experience can have strong ties to neuroscience, such as work with patients with neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s which ties into some of the reading lists. Depending on where you apply there can be a substantial element of neuroscience in your psychology degree. Work experience at your local hospital or volunteering with a group dedicated to address issues such as slowing of movement with patients with Parkinson’s can be enriching and enlightening, if this is what interests you.

Thank you! I was thinking about doing something with a charity but this could also be something to consider

Hello 🙂 I did an MSc Psychology (conversion) at Arden and have taught in the F.E sector for over 10 years. There is a useful article here which might help you from study mind

https://studymind.co.uk/ucas-guide/year-12-guide-to-gaining-psychology-work-experience/

If you are wary of clicking links on forums if you google 'psychology careers work experience' this is the first thing that comes up in the search

Hi! I just volunteered at a Mind charity shop 🙂 You don't need proper work experience for Psychology directly in the field you want to go into, just find something that allows you to interact with the public to show you have people skills and good communication.

Hello @e.hudson.colvill,

Well done for being so proactive!

Although work experience isn’t necessary for a personal statement in psychology, it can be very valuable for developing skills and finding out what you enjoy.

I was an online tutor for Tutor the Nation which was so rewarding and could be good to include in your personal statement.

Hope this helped and let me know if you have any other questions 🙂

Hii I might be repeating things that people have already said so sorry If I am! but for psych you’ll mainly get experience with placements through your university as it’s quite hard to get relevant experience for under 18’s since it’s such a serious subject.
However to boost your applications you could look into volunteering for psychological studies that are taking place in your area if they want your age group - you’ll be able to look for these through a local university.
Also, volunteering to help people (in any way really) can be quite relevant as you need to show that you’re good at communicating )
