Benedict’s gate (UEA)

Hi,

I am a first year who will be going to UEA in September.

I have decided to stay at Benedict’s gate but I’m not sure if that was the right thing to do as I read it’s privately owned and very quiet. I imagine this would be ideal for those in their second or third year who already have a social circle and want somewhere quieter but I don’t know if it’s the right environment for me as a first year. Does anyone have any experience of staying here? If so, I’d appreciate what you can tell me about it and life in halls in general.

Are flatmates really that big of a deal? It seems like students read a lot into where they stay and I don’t want to end up socially isolated.

Really would appreciate anything you can tell me!

Thanks

Hi Liam! Great to have you at UEA. One of my friends currently lives in Benedict's Gate so I am going to ask them and get back to you.

I'll be in touch soon 😊

Here we go!

"There is a lot of first years there, actually more so than second and thirds years. If I remember correctly 3/5 floors are for first years.

I think quiet is relative, it's really what you make of it. It's within walking distance to all the clubs etc and from what I could hear outside amy window the first years seem to have fun. There are lots of events on and people frequently sit outside in the courtyard of in the social spaces on the ground floor so there is lots of opportunities to meet people. The residents team are also helpful and will help if you don't get on with your flatmates but the nice thing is you can have your own and bathroom so you can avoid people if you wish.

Some negatives I would say is that it has recently gone up in price and is a 15 min walk + 20 minutes bus commute to UEA."

Hope this helps!

Hi @liam_michaelroy

First of all, welcome to UEA for September!
Benedict's gate is a good idea for city centre accommodation. Norwich city centre is an excellent place to stay for first year at UEA as you are near all the shops and the hub of the city centre and also a short commute into UEA. Loads of people catch the bus from the city centre to UEA, so you will definitely not be alone, if you decide to do that!
Many people find that their closest friends they meet at university are not just from their flatmates but from societies that they join and also coursemates. Joining a society at UEA would be a really good idea and likely to find better friends there as you will all have a common interest.
