Do you feel socially disconnected after starting work in the UK as an ethnic minority

Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out because I’ve been thinking a lot about what life feels like after graduating and starting work in the UK — especially for people from minority backgrounds.

Personally, I’ve seen friends (and myself) go through a weird phase after uni: busy with work, but also feeling like our social world shrunk overnight. It’s harder to meet people, harder to feel like you really “belong.”

If you’re also an ethnic minority or international graduate, and you’ve been working here for a while — how has your social life been?

Do you ever feel disconnected or lonely outside of work？

Have you found any ways to stay socially active or emotionally supported?

Or maybe it hasn’t been a problem for you at all — I’d really love to hear different experiences.

I’m not doing this for a formal survey or anything — I’m genuinely curious and trying to understand how people are feeling.

I don't remember ever feeling socially disconnected in a workplace setting, to be honest! I think I felt more socially disconnected at my undergrad uni than I ever have done in the working world. That said, although I'm of Sinhalese Sri Lankan origin, I'm a born-and-bred Londoner - so am in a very multicultural setting, which probably helps. Also, I've never worked full-time, so have had more time than most other people for socialising, etc. :colondollar:

I'm a UK born with a Sikh background, married (with 2 children) out of the religion. I have lived in the same since birth, and my Uni was a few miles away so I stayed at home.

I now work in the same place I was born. although apart from family, I have never had many friends who are the same race/ colour as me. I have never felt disconnected in any setting. although I hardly keep in touch with any friends from Uni (only about 3) and most of my friends are now from work or the parents of children in the same year as my children
