It’s not that deep just spend the summer learning the year 12 content and you’ll be fine

1) You said your dropping maths but continuing maths? Which one?
2) Why are you dropping a subject? Is it because it's too difficult or do you not like it?

It’s your life do what you want to do and let your parents crash out there’s nothing they can really do about it anyway

:wavey: I am doing sixth form over 3 years (currently doing 2 subjects and starting a third in September) and for me it was a really good idea. I moved to doing this in November due to personal circumstance (different to yours because i was working at a B in the subject i dropped) and its really not a big deal. Quite a few people at my school have done similar things to support their learning. Your other option to taking an extra year would be to self-study the year 12 sociology content over the summer and maybe double up and take year 12 and 13 sociology classes during year 13 to catch up then take all the exams in the summer 2026 season.

Nah, trust me - take the extra year. I wish I had done that. I instead ended up finishing at my sixth form after two years with one A level (Psychology), and then had to teach myself two A levels this year (Biology and Sociology). I wish I had just moved schools after year 12, and redone the whole thing because that would've been a lot easier than they way I did it.

I'm sure your parents will chill out, but I really wouldn't listen to them; seem like plebs.

You could suggest that you could be allowed to take the end of year 12 mock in September and if you do alright on it you can carry on with the course as a year 13. Hope it all goes well for you!

No, it shouldn't affect where you apply for uni. I knew someone who repeated the year as well, and I believe she got all offers back. I personally, also, recieved all of my offers back for psychology (Bath, Leeds, York, Exeter, Sussex). Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't even think unis will know that you've repeated year 12 unless your school mention it.

I am sorry about your parents, though. They shouldn't have reacted like that. I guess the most important thing is for you to focus on what the best course of action is for your own education, and they should be prioritising this as well. There's obviously no point continuing maths when it's dragging your other grades down since you're spending so much time on it.

But yeah, I genuinely regret not redoing year 12 so much.

I applied in 2025, for September. I'm confused... Are you thinking of redoing year 12? Or are you going to sit 2 subjects next year, and then do Sociology at school part time?

Ah, I see. In that case, you'd be applying for September 2027? You'd be applying with two achieved grades from 2026, and then your school would sort out your Sociology predicted grades for you so you'd be applying with two achieved grades, one predicted.

I applied this year with one achieved, and two predicteds and it wasn't a problem. I'm not sure if my referee explained why I did it this way in my reference, but it didn't affect the offers I received anyway.

The unis will see a three year gap between GCSEs and A levels ...

Im doing this currently and the options given to me were that i could do epq and/or an as level or a level during the third year or i could volunteer or work part time to prepare for leaving school.
