Hey!!
i'm applying for uni at the end of this year, i'm thinking either engineering or mathematics.
the problem is, i havent got ANYTHING to write in my personal statment...
i haven't really done anything outside of school and i dont have a job. during summer break this year, i was hoping to do some things to help with my application, but i dont know what i could do?
i could probably volunteering at a charity shop near me, and i also found these online courses for maths/physics that i could do but i don't know how useful these will be?
please can someone recommend stuff i can do for my application to scottish universities🙏🏼
(dont know why this got put under medical schools )

Hi @unknownnn7 ,

There is no specific you need to include in your personal statement so you can use things you might already be doing/have done and link it to your course. This might include any sort of role of responsibility you've held at school (prefect, librarian, helping at an open day, helping with a club) or even anything you've done through school (competitions, sports, clubs, challenges).

An important element that universities are looking to see is a genuine interest in the course. Whether that is engineering or mathematics you need to show the universities why you are interested in the study. This could be through wider reading, podcasts, films/tv, extra courses shows related to the subjects. Anything that demonstrates why you would like to study these subjects at universities is great to mention such as the online courses you've found.

Whilst it is nice to include some work or volunteer experience, it is not essential. It might help demonstrate skills such as time management, working as a team, organisation, etc so if you have time over summer it might be a nice idea. It could also help develop some new skills which would be useful for both your application but also your transition to university.

It's great that you're already starting to consider what you might write on a personal statement as you still have plenty of time. If you can use some of your summer to gain some experience and complete some extra reading/courses it might be nice to be able to use these on your personal statement.

Good luck!

Hi there!! (:

Unsure how your school has been, but any sort of roles within your school- like being a school captain, helping at clubs, or being involved in events are great to mention! Even without a formal job, those kinds of responsibilities show things like communication, leadership, and time management. If possible, you could also ask about helping out in S1/2 math/science classes or any after school revision sessions– it’s a nice way to demonstrate initiative and subject interest. (:

When I did my application, I included that I played the bagpipes (nothing to do with my chemistry degree lol) - but it was something I really enjoyed and was committed to. It showed dedication, discipline, and the ability to practise long-term towards a goal, which is really relevant for uni life too especially when it comes to managing independent study and staying motivated. I’d also say anything like teamwork (e.g. playing in a group), or performing in front of others, helps build confidence and resilience, which are skills unis look for. - so if you have any type of hobbies/interests similar this is also great to mention!😊

any research into the courses and why you feel its best suited to you, any books you've read or youtube videos/ted talks are always a fun thing to mention that shows you've been looking into the course past what you've experienced so far at school!

Id still recommend if you can volunteering or getting a job, I'd reccomend doing some research on what's avaible in your area and asking any of your math/sceicne if they know of any oppourtunities relating to the course that you could look into!

Hope this helps, goodluck with the application process!! <33
