Hi, another mature medic here, and I personally found 2nd year more manageable than first year because I knew what was high yield (exams) and what assessments I just needed to pass. 1st and 2nd year are both pre-clinical at my uni so not too different in terms of structure. 2nd year will build on top of the *clinical knowledge* taught in 1st year, so very useful to go over it (ANKI deck or likewise) before you start the new term (just the clinical knowledge like heart attacks, asthma, COPD is fine). Most medical schools teach by blocks e.g. Neuro, Gastro, Urology, etc. - I found some parts of the body easier to learn than others due to factors like pre-existing interest or knowledge, or easier to grasp concepts. In my 2nd year, one of blocks taught worked slightly in my favour as there was a pre-existing interest which made studying them feel easier. The Professor was also helpful in this block and would inform us what concepts we needed to remember as it would definitely show up in the exam, which it did. If I had to go back, I would try and read a bit about Neuro before starting 2nd year - this was a trickier block for me and would've been very helpful to have some foundational knowledge going in.

Due to better understanding of how to pass the year (from my first year experience), this resulted in better time management - I actually made time for gym, part-time job and coffee/dinner with friends (which I did very little of in 1st year, also no part-time job then), and was less stressed overall. Personally felt like I worked smarter this year but not any harder for much better results. And actually took some days off for mental health. Hope sharing my experience has helped in some way. Best of luck!
