Study timetable

I am a distance learning student and I would like to know, from current A-Level students, how much they study each subject each week at college or school, so I have an idea about how much I should be devoting to my studies each day/week..

A-Level students typically study 4-6 hours per subject per week outside of class. Total weekly study time can range from 12 to 24 hours, depending on the number of subjects and individual needs. A daily routine of 2-3 hours, 5 days a week, can help manage study time effectively.

We recommend about 10 hours a week - 5 hours lessons plus 5 hours in addition. It will vary with the time of year - hope that helps

Hi there,

I hope you are doing well! Personally, I do not think there is set amount of time to devote to studying because everyone learns at different rates. From memory when I was at school, I would do additional 3/4 hours every night assuming I would get home from school by 3.30/4pm. I would often do 50minutes-1hour of study, followed by 20 minutes break and would continue until I felt I was ready to call it a night.

Hope this helps!

Hi @Skybird,

Hey! I finished my A-levels three years ago (I did Biology, Chemistry and English Language), hopefully I can give you an idea of how much time we spent on each subject.

We usually had around 4–5 hours of lessons per subject per week in school. On top of that, most teachers expected us to do about 4–6 hours of independent study per subject too, things like revision notes, reading, essay practice, past paper questions, etc. So in total, I’d say it worked out to about 10–12 hours per subject per week.
If you’re distance learning, I’d recommend trying to match that time roughly, maybe around 2 hours a day per subject, with more time on the weekends for catch-up or revision. I found it really helpful to break it down into smaller blocks across the week instead of trying to cram everything into one long day. Something like:

1–1.5 hours per subject on weekdays (so ~3 hours of study a day)

Then a few 2-hour blocks over the weekend for more focused work or exam practice

Also, when it gets closer to exams, you’ll naturally end up doing a bit more. And honestly, the quality of your study is more important than just the number of hours, active recall, timed questions, flashcards, etc. helped me way more than just reading notes.

Hope this helps,

Hi there!

This depends on the time you have and if you have work/family matters on top of that. I did around 15 hours of study after school (3 hours per day) and roughly four hours each day on weekends

Kind regards, Jenifer (kingston rep)

A-Level students typically spend approximately 9 to 12 hours per week per subject on a combination of class time and independent study.

Class time usually accounts for around 4.5 to 6 hours per subject per week, with the remaining time dedicated to independent study.

Independent study involves homework, revision, practice, and research.

Distance learning students should create a timetable, prioritize subjects, break down tasks, review regularly, and seek support.
