applying to uni independently vs sixth form

Hi everyone,

Can you apply to uni independently even if you're in a sixth form (that you recently joined) but you have a teacher that knows you better and is willing to give you the predicted grades you need and the references? Do universities like Cambridge accept that? Thanks!!

Is the teacher in the same sixth form?

No but they taught me throughout secondary school so they've known me for 5+ years compared to teachers at my new sixth form for less than 7 months.

Generally when your sixth form writes your reference, they get subject references from your teachers and then the 'UCAS person' will collate the best bits of it into a coherent piece that fulfils the reference. If your secondary school teacher hasn't written a UCAS reference before, they may struggle to write a reference that fully hits all of the points or falls into some of the common traps.

If you're quite keen for your secondary school teacher to be part of this process, I would ask them if they could send the reference into your school and then the 'UCAS person' can collate everything (from your secondary school teacher and then your subject teachers).
I think the only issue with this is that individual unis may not want a reference from a secondary school teacher who isn’t familiar with your level 3 work.
