My sister failed uni

My sister has failed her nursing in degree having received a fail in the academic assignment and a fail for lateness in the resubmission , her attendance is also 30% but she has a letter from the GP about her mental health and is getting checked for ADHD. She has included this in her appeal but we simply don’t have the money to fund her accommodation for the extra year, if she has to repeat realistically, what are her options?

On the nursing course when I failed my resits, I went into something g called academic retrieval where I didn't attend uni and just focused on the assignments for the full year and submitted whrn the new forst years would be. However on the nursing course you have to have 80% attendance in all aspects to be able to register with the nmc.

Yeah, I'm afraid you can't expect to sit through a professional degree and pass it without attending I'm afraid. There are very real competency questions raised where people do not attend the course.

Mental health will not be accepted as a valid excuse, either. I am near certain the NMC will have something to say about this regarding one's fitness to practice and the onus being on the candidate on recognising that their health is impairing their ability to learn adequately.

Nursing, midwifery etc are all intense professional courses. This isn't like studying chemistry or maths. In professional degrees the welfare and safety of patients is a primary concern and the NMC are obliged to uphold standards aimed at protecting these.

I have to agree with ErasistratusV: I think it's unlikely she would be offered a repeat given the academic failure combined with the non-attendance. It sounds like she needs to take some time out to get better and hopefully she would then be in a better place to realistically assess her options.

The NMC has the powers to not allow anyone to qualify if they don't meet the standards required for nursing degrees, attendance is important as the student learning from being there and that everything they learn throughout the whole 3 years as a student nurse counts for when they sit any exams, assignment and essays as coursework there learn from this all counts towards doing these things mentioned.

She won't have to submit everything to the NMC including any additional information that they requested including medical history if asked.

NMC more or less would probably reject her appeal on grounds of extremely bad attendance. Nursing is extremely stressful at times and how would she cope with it especially if she has ADHD because you are dealing with drugs etc on people and you can't afford to make mistakes.
This might sound brutal but truthfully she's could be a liability and the NMC will look at that and at the end of the day they won't let someone be a registered nurse etc if they think 💬 🤔 🤔 they are not fit enough to practice as a qualified nurse etc.
Agree with reply numbers 2 .

NHS Registered midwife.

I absolutely agree with what you have said about this one .
i would be shocked 😲😲 if NMC overture the decision but I can't see it...

She should push the appeal with her GP letter and ADHD check—there's a good chance it’ll help. If not, she could take a break and come back later. Also, ask the university about hardship funds for help with costs.

As surprising as it is, my sister was given an exceptional third attempt due in 3 weeks and if she passes she may be advancing to third year with her cohort

This person has not met the attendance requirements for their academic year. Do you really think they should be allowed to continue on the course? Would you accept a train driver or airline pilot who had only half the required training time logged?

if she has only got a 30% attendance no matter what she does in a 3rd attempt she simply can meet the number of hours she is required to study and practice. how has she done on her placements

She completed all her placements, she failed the presentation and essay two times

You stated in your original post the person's attendance was 30%.

If this is the case, the outcome of any essay or examination or anything else is immaterial. You will not be allowed to progress, much less finish a professional course if your attendance is so low.

Can she transfer to a uni closer to home?
