How to take back control of my life? Please help.

I'm starting uni in London in Sept of this year. My Dad is a control freak, my mum enables him. They promised I could stay in accommodation but have since changed their mind, so I have to stay at home (no matter what I say, my parents won't budge and have even threatened to withdraw financial support.) I now have to stay at home, and they probably won't let me go out (I'm the eldest girl in an African immigrant household.) I got top grades at GCSE, predicted 3A* so I don't know why they're so reluctant to let me live my life KNOWING that I can take my studies seriously.

I need to take back control of my life. I just turned 18, I can't live like this anymore and it's so frustrating :frown: Please help, any advice or tips greatly appreciated.

Not knowing you or your parents, this is difficult to make assumptions but there are a couple of ways of looking at this:

Your parents care about you and are being protective. They are from a different culture and I am sure they worry about you being exposed to risk. Sadly, as the eldest you are the one who has it hard, they will be more relaxed with your younger siblings!

London accommodation is expensive! The cheapest student accommodation in greater London I have come across is £11,000 a year, the average is £16,000pa and £23,000pa is not unusual. That is more than some people's mortgages. Can they afford to give you that, plus food? They have your younger siblings and themselves to think about too.

If you are determined to live away from home then consider a university in another city. You could have the student experience and much of your rent will be covered by your maintenance loan and your parents would not have to top up much. Cities in the North of England are vibrant and much cheaper with the added bonus that you cannot commute from London.

Good luck!
