Hi guys
I am study cs at uni i just want to know how important are the first year results are for the applying for masters degree in top unis.
I have got a first class degree but one of my module i passed it with 42 grade as i was sick to do the course work for the module.

Hi @laje23

As far as I'm aware, most unis will be looking at your overall undergraduate qualification rather than individual modules when considering your place on a master's course. Most unis will have their requirements listed on their course pages for you to check.

If in doubt, you could always email the admissions team for the unis you're interested in to check with them.

Hope this helps.

If I've understood this correctly, you have a first in Computer Science from a UK university. It is your degree class thst matters. I think you'll be fine applying for a Masters.

If they ask about your 1st year mark - I don't think they will - you can explain the circumstances.

Hey,

Well done on doing so well overall! One low mark (especially in first year) very rarely ruins your chances of getting into a good master’s programme, even at competitive universities. Most UK unis place far more weight on your overall degree classification (e.g. aiming for a strong 2:1 or First) and on your second- and final‑year performance, because those years reflect higher-level study that’s closer to master’s expectations.

That said, admissions teams do see your full transcript, and if the module you've flagged was an important foundation one (say core programming, maths, or algorithms) it can raise a question, but that’s where context and progression matter. If you were ill (which you were) and your marks in later, related modules are strong, that tells a much clearer story: early disruption, solid recovery, strong capability. If your illness was formally recorded as mitigating circumstances, that helps; if not, you can still explain it briefly in your personal statement and ask an academic referee to mention it.

I’d recommend speaking with someone at your university about postgraduate applications. At the University of Salford, for example, students can get one‑to‑one support through the Careers & Enterprise team and guidance from a personal tutor when framing academic performance and mitigating circumstances for master’s applications. Your university will almost certainly offer something similar, they can help you interpret entry requirements, position your grades, and draft a strong reference request.

That one 42% in the first year won’t hold you back if the rest of your record shows the ability you clearly have. You’re on the right track.

Good luck 😊
