Retaking alevels

So I just finished my alevels and it’s safe to say I might definitely have to resit them next year. I firmed Aston and then put cov uni as my insurance to do accounting and finance but really don’t want to go to cov. If I resit my alevels next year do I have to reapply on ucas or can I just differ my entry and would that mean paying the ucas fee again. Also heard unis such as Warwick and UoB don’t accept resit students so would I have a chance of getting in there or is that not possible even through clearing. I’m not sure what to do and how this works.

yes most unis do accept resit students , there a few universities that are a bit fussy like prestigious ones and Manchester (DESPITE saying they accept resits on their website they still do not) for e.g. and in terms of taking in to account extenuating circumstance which is quite hearbreaking but most unis do accept them even leeds for example does. University of Birmingham also accepts them dependent upon ur course but its a myth that they dont accept them at all , they absolutely do. BUT seen as though ur waiting for ur results i suggest u do not please stress! as you may have got well better grades than u anticipated and u can worry about this later. Hope u get into ur desired course.

Hi @user1232025,

Congratulations on finishing your A-levels! 🎉 I know results time can be stressful, but please try not to worry just yet. You might have done better than you think, many students are surprised in a good way when results come out!

If you don’t meet the conditions for your firm choice but do meet the requirements for your insurance choice, then you'll automatically be placed at your insurance university. However, if you're sure you don't want to go to your insurance choice, you can choose to decline your place using the ‘Decline My Place’ button on your UCAS Hub. That would then allow you to look for other options through Clearing.

In terms of resitting your A-levels and applying again next year; most universities would require you to reapply through UCAS, which does mean paying the UCAS fee again. Some universities, like Aston, might allow you to defer your place to the following year - it’s worth contacting them directly to ask if that’s an option.

Regarding universities like Warwick or Birmingham, some competitive courses may not accept resit applicants, but this can vary depending on the course and how many resits you take. It’s best to check directly with the universities or look at their admissions policies on their websites. Entry through Clearing is sometimes possible, but for very competitive courses, it can be limited.

If you're thinking about Clearing, feel free to visit our Oxford Brookes Clearing thread! It contains lots of helpful information.

Wishing you the very best! Please remember, you have options no matter what your results are!

Best wishes,

1) If you know that you don't want to go to Coventry - whatever your results are - then withdraw that choice now. Its p[erfectly okay just to have a Firm choice, and if you don't get the results for that offer, then this makes it far easier to go straight into Clearing without the faff of then trying to extricate yourself fro Coventry.

2) Once you have your results, you can only defer a place, not 'an offer'. So, for example, if Aston accepted you on Results Day, you could then defer that place until 2026 and take a gap-year knowing you had that to go to, but if Aston rejected you, then that offer disappears and you would have to reapply next year. Its now rare for Unis not to accept resit re-applications, so yes, any new application could include your previous Uni choices, and/or totally new ones if you wanted that.

As above, its very normal to assume the worst and that you will have to resit etc - but you could have done better than you assume, Aston may still take you even if you miss a grade, or you may find something that you are happy with in Clearing.
