4plus test for Early Years: how to prepare prospective candidates

It has become second nature to go from Mumsnet to the Student Room these days. Anyone here who has had their children "interviewed" at 4 (or earlier) for proper schools such as Falkner House (girls). It sounds very interesting and this would lead me to do an Early Years diploma - but solely dedicated to the private selective sector. Curious to know what they mean by "academic" at 3 or 4 years old. I hope it does not mean painting their faces or getting themselves dirty with mud. This is a serious enquiry btw. Piaget and Vygotsky and double mirrors in the past, for observation, but all very distant from having a child in front of me. Children scare me since watching the Omen in the 70s!
