Help - s6 subjects

HI EVERYONE,
I’m trying to enjoy my summer but my school keeps pestering me about my subject choices for S6.
this year I have taken: AH Math, AH Physics and AH Math of Mechanics. On top of all that, I took AH Chemistry because I was not sure if I would prefer that or Mechanics (I prefer mechanics). Before the summer holidays started, I told my school that I was going to drop chemistry and want to take a higher in place of it. I actually only want to do math, physics and mechanics but my school is INSISTING that i do another subject. So when i went to see what i could do in place of AH Chemistry, I was left with some of the worst possible options. Btw i hate written subjects (English, history etc.) so i immediately ruled them out and I can only choose from either Higher Biology or Higher Design and Manufacture 💔. Do you think I should even bother doing another higher? Or should I just pick biology to be able to do biomedical? I feel like the workload might be too much idk.

I don’t actually know what kind of engineering I want to do right now.
also my prelim results (for Higher) were:
A - Chemistry
A - Computing Science
A - Math
A - Physics
B - English

And my predicted grades are all A’s.

LAST QUESTIONS (SORRY) : do universities really want 4 subjects in S6? Or do you think they would be fine with 3, considering they are advanced highers?

THANK YOU SO MUCH

Hi there (:

It already sounds like you’ve been predicted a really solid set of qualifications! and with three Advanced Highers, unis will recognise that as a strong S6 year. You’d usually only need to add another subject if a specific course requires that subject (like you mentioned with biology for biomed courses), so it might be worth checking directly with the unis you're interested in (there is usually an admissions email/phone no on the unis website) - they’ll be able to confirm what’s expected. (:

Unless that extra Higher is essential for a course you’re seriously considering, it might just add unnecessary stress on top of an already heavy workload. You’re clearly working at a high level already, so don’t feel pressured to overload yourself unless there’s a good reason to, if your school is really insistant about taking another subject a good option is always an SCQF qualifcation if these are avaible at your school - my sister did one of these in retail just to fill up her timetable since the school was also desperate for another subject! - these type of qualifcations are usually skills for work and look great on a CV when your applying for any part-ime jobs and are probably a better use of your time than a higher since sounds like youll have a strong set of these (: + usually no end of year exam (yay!!)

Hope this helps, goodluck with S6 & uni applications! 😊

Thank you so much, this is really helpful. I’m yet to decide what I want to study, so I’ll look at different courses outside of engineering probably and email more unis.
Thanks!!

Hey! 😊

I totally get how you’re feeling subject choices for S6 can be a lot.

Taking AH Maths, Physics, and Mechanics is already a really strong combination for engineering. Most universities are fine with three solid Advanced Highers, especially if they’re relevant to the cours. That said, it’s definitely worth checking out the entry requirements on university websites for the engineering courses you’re considering. It’ll give you a clearer idea of whether three AHs will meet the requirements and might even help you figure out which type of engineering you’re most drawn to.

You’re clearly doing great already, so trust your instincts. And if you’re still unsure about which engineering path to take that’s completely normal. You’ve still got time to figure it out! 😊
