I feel demotivated from studying, what do I do?

I’m a first year a level student and it seems no matter how little or how much I study I get the same results (these are C’s and I would like B-A’s). I have my finally philosophy test to revise for before summer and I just don’t see the point if I’m going to end up with a C or D anyway, any tips to get out of this academic slump?

Hi @I_L

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling down and frustrated about your results. I completely understand how disheartening it can be to put in effort and not see the results you want, as that can really affect your motivation. But don’t give up just yet. Sometimes it’s not about how much you study, but how you study.

Try changing up your revision techniques. Blurting, flashcards, mind maps, and especially exam questions can make a huge difference. Go through past papers and mark schemes to get familiar with exactly what the examiners are looking for. It’s not just about knowing the content but about applying it in the right way.

Also, speak to your teacher and ask them to go through a paper with you to help spot where you’re losing marks. You still have another year ahead, so use the summer to catch up, work on your weaker areas, and build your confidence.

Don’t let your grades this year define your potential. A lot can change in Year 13 and you’ve got time to turn things around. You’ve got this.

Hi there,

I understand how you may feel and it is difficult to remain motivated. However, you must remember you and you alone are responsible for your future, you also have a lot of time to reverse this. I would suggest doing past paper questions as the best way to test your memory is through application. Secondly, start as early as possible, doing little and often. This prevents cramming for your exams and stress. I would use this summer to tackle topics you don't quite understand, it may feel uncomfortable however it is the best way to grow and prepare you for year 13. Nailing year 12 is essential for success next year, in my opinion. Good luck!
