Masters entry requirements

Are Masters degrees generally less competitive than undergraduate programs? I want to do a masters in an entirely different subject to my undergraduate. The entry requirements for the masters I want to do state that you can have any undergraduate but I’m wondering what my chances of getting in are?
In the UK? Generally yes, but it really depends on the specific course at that specific university. Some are more competitive than others.

If they say there’s no subject requirements, then doing something unrelated is very unlikely to disadvantage you.

Hey!

In general, Master’s degrees can be a bit less competitive than undergrad courses, mainly because fewer people apply and the applications are more focused on your specific interest in the subject, rather than just grades.

If the course you’re looking at states that they accept any undergraduate degree, then that’s a good sign they’re open to people coming in from different academic backgrounds, especially if you can show a genuine interest in the subject and any relevant experience (even if it’s informal or self-taught etc).

Your chances really come down to:

Meeting the minimum grade requirement (like a 2:1 or 2:2, depending on the course)

Writing a strong personal statement explaining why you want to switch subjects

Highlighting any transferable skills or relevant experiences

So if you’re passionate about the subject and can show that clearly in your application, you’ve definitely got a fair shot. Loads of people change direction at postgrad level, and it's actually really common!

Hope that helps & best of luck 🙂
