Did you know that Birmingham City University is number 1 in the UK for Film Production? We've been ranked as number 1 vs other universities in the UK for 2 years in a row! (Guardian League Table 2025 and 2024).

So, if you want to get behind the scenes of film and TV and see yourself making your own productions, our Digital Film Production course might be for you.

On this course, you'll be able to:

Develop essential skills with film production technology from script to screen

Bring your creative ideas to life using industry-standard sound, camera and lighting equipment, and learn how to apply technology and craft in the pursuit of your artistic vision

Develop an extensive portfolio of work in addition to that produced for assessment

Engage with industry in various ways, including module assessments based on live briefs, access to Industrial Mentors for many of your modules, and the opportunity to take a 36-week Industrial Placement between your second and final years (BCU has been voted the best university in the West Midlands for providing meaningful work experience placements to students)

Use industry-standard facilities including two film/television studios, four multi-track recording studios, post-production suites, a BOLT JR+ camera and several editing and grading stations.

Laura, Digital Film Production graduate, said:

“The course has given me a deep-dive into lots of different areas of film production, which has been great to help cement my understanding of the filmmaking workflow as a whole."

“What I have particularly loved is that the lecturers pay attention to you as an individual, particularly in the final year, by helping and encouraging you to develop your chosen specialism. The access to industry-standard equipment and editing software has enabled me to further practise my skills when not on campus.”

Hi @Rocky hockey

The course page for Media Production: https://www.bcu.ac.uk/courses/media-production-ba-hons-2025-26#entry_requirements, says a good portfolio is required. We have some portfolio advice tailored to this course which includes advice for people who have studied creative courses and those who haven't. You can read this advice here: https://www.bcu.ac.uk/arts-design-and-media/portfolio-guidance/media

As it says, we welcome applicants who haven't studied media before, as there are different ways to show your passion for storytelling.

As for not having media experience, in your personal statement, I'd recommend drawing on experiences you do have that have developed the skills you will need to study a media course. For example, experiences and studies that have developed your experience with storytelling, critical thinking and media literacy. You can download our personal statement guide, which includes an example from a student who has studied media at BCU: https://bit.ly/3TscNw2

I hope that's helpful 🙂 let me know if you have any more questions!

Hi everyone, If you’re thinking about studying Film at uni and want a course that is both creative, theoretical, and pro-active then UEA is a great choice!

I have just graduated in Film and Television Studies and I absolutely loved my course. You can check it out here. I was able to choose modules from the production course, which allowed me to create my own television show and film live events hosted in our own events venue (the LCR).

The production course will provide you with an extensive knowledge into film making and television production. Our university is also equipped with its very own television studio and media labs. You can also book out equipment whenever you choose.

UEA’s campus is a beautiful, student-friendly city with amazing links to the industry. From film festival, to a thriving indie cinema scene it’s not only exciting but sure to feel like home. Our lectures aren’t all academics, many have worked for the BBC, been critics, or researches actively working in the field. You’ll be learning from people who have real experience and can provide you with the tools for after you graduate.

Check out our website here and feel free to visit an open day if you want to see our studios in action!

I hope this is helpful, feel free to ask any questions!
