Midwifery at LSBU or Kings

I was hoping to find out from any current students or graduates:
1)how long is each placement block every year?
2) how many night shifts do you get within one placement block?
3) do you stay at one hospital for the whole placement block or does it change?
4) how do you manage being assigned to a hospital that is really far from you?
5) how do you manage the workload?

Thank you

Hello, I did midwifery at King's for my first year. My placement in hospital started at December right before Christmas times. I remember doing around 2 weeks of hospital placement with 3 days per week. The night shifts really depends on the co-ordinator of your hospital placement. For example, your first shift could be a night shift or they can straight put you into night shifts for 3 days for example. You can go and change this, however, you will require a reasonable explanation for the changes. Yes, you do stay at one hospital block placement throughout unless you want to get it changed or some circumstances happen which require you to change. I got university accommodation which really helped, however, they usually assign you with your hospital block placement based on your home address. So, don't worry, people usually get the ones closest to them. Hope this helps!

At LSBU, the Midwifery course placements are typically arranged in blocks lasting between 4 to 12 weeks each year. These placements make up about half of your course, alternating with theory weeks. You usually stay at one hospital or community site for the full placement block, unless you request a change.

During each placement block, you will work 12-hour shifts, including weekends and night shifts. The exact number of night shifts varies with each placement and depends on your mentor’s rota, but expect to work both day and night shifts throughout your training.

Placements are allocated based on your home postcode, so the university tries to assign you to a nearby trust. If you’re placed far from home, you can discuss options with the placement team, such as temporary accommodation or possible reassignment.

To manage the workload, LSBU offers preparation weeks before placements, support from mentors and academic tutors, and simulation lab practice. Your hours are tracked using the ePAD system, helping to avoid issues with missing placement hours. Self-care strategies like planning meals, resting between shifts, and leaning on your support network are also important.

For more details, visit LSBU’s official Midwifery course page and their placement preparation, Programme approval report and LSBU specific guidelines for the 2.0 Practice Assessment Document (PAD)

What’s the timetable like for midwifery at King’s? Are you in uni 5 days a week? Or do you get some days off?
