I'm about to fail my first year In manufacturing Engineering

To sum it up, I'm studying a manufacturing engineering course, and I failed a math's exam. I cannot pass this module as I literally cannot understand it, I feel like I have wasted a year of my life, (fyi, I am 18 turning 19). I am looking at doing a foundation year at keel for data science as that sector excites me more, however I do know that It could entail math's, and I am not really the best. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Surely with data science it's not the case that the course "could" entail maths, but that it "does"?

Hey there , I'm sorry to hear that you haven't done so well in your maths especially considering that engineering is a degree that is heavily reliant on math and you will be using it throughout your degree. Engineering math is mostly Calculus , differential equations , complex number & transforms and some linear algebra which is all used analysis fluid flow , motion , heat transfer and so forth to solve technical problems. Whereas the math in data science is used to identify patterns and insight from data using mainly statistics , linear algebra , some basic calculus . The math is slightly different I would suggest you identify which area's in math you struggle with the most and determine if you'd be able do the math in the computer science course . If you do decide to make the switch at least early clearing has started and you can start getting offers from universities for different courses before you make the switch .
I hope this helps a little .

Hello,

Firstly, really sorry to hear that you have struggled with the Math aspect in your current course, it can be really tricky and sometimes hard to get your head around, I am sure you are not the only one to have felt like this.

Here at Harper, our new Applied Data Science courses are available as a BSc (Hons) course which is 3 years and a FdSc course which is a foundation course that lasts 2 years. Both of these are available in Clearing 2025, meaning the course starts in September 2025, our admissions team are on hand to help you with any Clearing questions - [email protected] and 0300 131 3950 📞

You can check out the full foundation course details here - this also includes the contact information for the course leader Dr Edwin Harris if you wanted to contact someone for specific details on the foundation course, what data science entails or career prospects. I've listed some of the course modules below, if you would like any further explanation on any of them let me know 😃

Real World Artificial Intelligence

Sustainability and Ethics for Machines and Humans

Programme Concepts - for example, utilising a modern programming language (typically Python)

Thinking with Data - which is an introductory module for students new to data science, statistics an R programming

Best of luck deciding on your next steps 😊

Hello there,
I am very sorry to hear you are struggling to pass this module especially given how maths focused an engineering degree will be. However a data science degree would also contain a large amount of maths so be careful of this. Maybe look at any prospective courses modules and contact the university department to ask about the maths requirement.
However foundation years can be very useful to get you up to speed with the knowledge needed and give you a massive head start boost on year one of the course so I cannot recommend them enough if you are looking at them.
