He planned everything in his book published years in advance. So, it was premeditated. At the same time Chamberlain might have been more aggressive, Stalin might have taken another view, and the US may have involved themselves earlier. And you may also argue that the Versailles treaty was unjust and created something he could exploit.

Use the Edexcel A-Level History G route textbook by Hodder for some introductory reading.

One very interesting point about the question is the use of the year 1939, rather than something like "How far can Hitler be blamed for the outbreak of WW2?"

Could you clarify how you find this at all interesting?

Consider the difference between causing a war and causing it to break out at a specific point in time.

I see your point, but I highly doubt that minor difference would prompt any major differences in answering compared to the question "How far can Hitler be blamed for the outbreak of WW2?". I do not think there's anything to be read into with the inclusion of "in 1939" in the question, it's probably just there to provide some extra information.

Interestingly, I do. It might be an 'overly clever" distinction, but given the very generic answers that the standard interpretation will result in, it might achieve higher marks.

As I said above, "in 1939" gives options that aren't available with the vanilla phrasing.

In a similar vein, if I were faced with the question about Hitler's responsibility for the outbreak of WW2, I might mischievously conclude that the answer is not at all because WW2 started with Japanese aggression in China in 1931 or 1937. 😁
