Oxford Essay Competitions and Data

Hello,

Weird question. I took part in an essay competition with one of the colleges at Oxford. It wasn't winning - which I understood, but it was helpful on reflection at working out how to improve! However, the examiners report has just been released. Inside this, they discussed the growing use of AI to generate sections/the structure for essays. I am honestly more against AI than most people I know - I have zero interest in using it.

But the examiners report listed topics they considered examples indicative of the use of AI because they were 'common'. This included my topic. I understand it was probably not massively original, and recognised that this was an issue with my submission, but this was because it was a core module of the curriculum on the subject at GCSE. When I wrote this essay at the start of y12, it was the glaringly obvious topic for me to choose. I did not use AI, so I am concerned not only that I've been grouped in with people who may have used AI, but also that this might effect any future applications I have.

So basically - am I just being paranoid / completely misunderstanding date protection laws? Or do I have an actual issue ?

Sorry for the long question 😭😭

I suspect that you are just overthinking this.
Its a general warning and not aimed specifically at you.

I add that what you describe raises no issue of data protection.

Almost everyone misunderstands data protection legislation. It's one of the most confusing and least useful types of legislation in existence.
