Further Maths

Hi,

I really want to do further maths for A-level and i kind of have to cause of my degree choices however my school doesn't offer it at GCSE but they offer it at a-level. Some people say further-maths a-level although beneficial doesn't really like boost you up and all but some say it really does help and have an effect on a - level further maths so does it really?

Are you studying with the Pearson Edexcel examboard? Because there are several YouTube channels by Maths teachers and it is not difficult to achieve an A* or A grade if you work through the videos.

You don't require GCSE Further Maths, because A-Level Maths repeats the content in Year 1 term 1 and some in term 2. 😉

Which degree do you want to do? 😧

What degree subject(s) are you thinking about?

Hi, I take A-Level further maths (currently predicted an A*!). Although I did take further maths GCSE, I would genuinely say it doesn’t make a massive difference, so don’t worry too much. Just make sure you’re confident in your regular GCSE maths skills, or else you’ll likely struggle, but any useful content you’ve missed from further maths GCSE (besides matrices) will be taught through the regular A-level spec. Good luck!

I never did FM GCSE and have had no problems with A-Level Maths and FM.
I looked at a FM GCSE paper while waiting to do my actual Maths GCSE and it didn't seem to include much more content, it's all covered in AS level maths or FM (though that's just matrices I've heard).
FM GCSE would probably be an easy grade but it won't help you significantly with A-Levels so you shouldn't worry at all about doing it or not.

FM level 2 [it's not a GCSE] is a waste of time - we don't teach it yet our students get amazing A level results. Oxbridge offers and places every year so if you need if for your degree then take it.

I think it would help you a lot in the long run, but if the university gives an offer on three subjects that's all you would require. But I must say I never regret my decision to study further maths, HOWEVER I didn't have any teachers for it and failed it twice. But I saw my abilities as hyperbolic and tried to do it in a year. With a teacher it's easy. I can teach you. And revel in my further maths glory.

For maths gcse we do edexcel and it will most likely be the same for a - levels . For degree options I want to keep it wide, mainly engineering in specific aeronautical engineering or ai engineering, although i still don't know which one

Then you should choose Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Computer Science. 🙂

Please ignore thegeek888 - they aren't at university and often give poor advice.

You don't need Further Maths for Engineering [I teach Maths] and only a few unis ask for it.

I would look at a few unis you might be interested in and see what they say about subject requirements.

You don't need to have studied level 2 FMaths [it's not a GCSE] to take the A level FM but you do need a good GCSE maths grade - preferable a 9.

Please stop giving poor advice - it's not helpful and often what you say is harmful.
