Unsure about resits

Hi, I'm a student at the University of Brighton. I'm currently waiting on my results email. But I know I've failed 2 modules, and as a result, I'm pretty sure i can resit them. The thing is, it wouldn't make a difference to my final grade even if i resit the exams or not.

Will the university still make me do a resit? Or will I be allowed to graduate anyway?

And even if i do graduate, will i graduate with my degree (BSc Hons), or will i graduate with an ordinary degree (BSc)

Yes, you need to resit them to gain the credits required to pass the year. In the majority of places, if you do not resit and pass, you will not have sufficient credits and so will not graduate

Hi,

Whether or not you are required to resit the failed modules depends on the university's progression rules. Most UK universities, including Brighton, require you to pass all core modules to be awarded your degree, regardless of whether resitting affects your actual final grade classification.

If the modules you failed are essential for progression and you need them to meet the overall credit requirements, then it is likely that you will still have to resit them. Often, resits are capped at a pass mark of 40 but this is required in order to gain the credits for the module overall.

In terms of graduating with a BSc (Hons) or an ordinary BSc, this is dependent on whether you have passed enough credits at the correct level.

I advise contacting either your course convener or your academic advisor who can both clarify the exact outcome in your situation.

Best of luck!

Hi there,

I would echo what others have said really - that it depends on your university and its policy. It is likely that you will have to rest them as most universities will require students to gain a certain amount of credits in order to pass, even if it does not make a difference to your final result. I think it is likely that you will have to resit, unless your uni has something in place where you don't have to. Sometimes you will be allowed to pass the degree with one failed module, but not two.

I'm not sure about the BSc Hons or Bsc. As far as I am aware, this isn't based on how many modules you pass, but the type of modules that you do - so some universities make you do a dissertation or equivalent to get the Hons part of the degree, but this will vary I think.

The best people to talk to are your uni. See if you can contact your universities help team as they should know, or get in touch with your tutors as they should also know whether you have to resit. If you have an academic advisor it may be worth contacting them too.

I hope some of this helps!

My expected end course of date just changed from 06/06/25 to 30/09/25. Hence, i think it's definitely a resit. I'm glad I got a second chance at it. Hopefully, I will get through it this time. Thank you for your responses and help. I genuinely really appreciate it.

Ps. Still haven't received the results email yet 😕

The usual rule is that you need to pass 360 credits to be awarded an honours degree.

If you've failed two modules, then you won't receive credit for them -- and so you won't have the 360 credits required for honours.

An ordinary (or "pass") degree (i.e. a degree without honours) is typically awarded if you've been passed 300 credits -- though you'd need to check the regulations at your university to see if that's how it works there.

Your university can't make you do a resit -- they're not going to kidnap you and force you into an exam hall -- but if you don't do the resit, you won't get the credits, and hence (if the regulations allow it) you're likely to get an ordinary degree.

Is there a particular reason you don't want to do the resits if they're offered?

It's just that if it's not going to affect my overall grade I don't think it's necessary but I have come to the realisation that I'd rather do the resit and prove it to myself.
