Onboarding and finding a masters - Pathways to Planning Cohort 3

Hi all,
I'm making this thread for anyone who's managed to get onto the Pathways to Planning Programme - congratulations!!!! - to discuss onboarding!
Edit: adding the link to the original P2P thread that focuses mainly on applications (I was finding it hard to track down onboarding-specific questions) https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7570970&p=100330218

What masters courses are you all considering, and where? How do we figure out which courses are 'the best' and apply? This is the space for all those questions

I got a place at Bristol City Council (BCC) and I'm trying to find the other candidate who's starting there 🙂 I did French and German BA at the Uni of Bristol for my undergrad and just finished it.

Re Masters courses - I reckon BCC would choose the Uni of the West of England because it's close and it's a great uni, don't get me wrong, but I know it ranks lower than the Uni of Bristol where I did my undergrad and so was hoping to go to a uni that ranks a little higher even if that's through distance learning.

I'm looking at Cardiff Uni a lot because I'm from Cardiff, so if anyone did their undergrad at Cardiff could you let me know how you found it there?
Also have seen that Oxford and UCL offer town planning masters so am keen to at least try applying for them!

Whatever happens, I'll be happy with whichever course or apprenticeship they give me because it's completely paid for!

Heyyyy I’m applying for UCL

Has anybody actually applied yet? I’m unable to get as UCL require the transcript of uni grades which I don’t get until the 7th by I’m going to do it as soon as I get that. What’s everyone saying in personal statements?

Do you have your uni grade transcript already available to you?

Reply 7

Yeah but my transcript isn’t from this year so I had it already, but I’m pretty sure you can apply with a predicted grade if you have one or explain that your waiting for a final grade for a conditional offer to study. Once they know your part of the pathways scheme it should be somewhat secure anyway.

I’ve applied to Liverpool. Town and Regional Planning, Master’s in Civic Design (MCD). Had option for Sheffield too with the other council I got offer from.

I don’t have full transcript either so in a word document added my first two year results and screen grabs of grades in final year. They said offer will be conditional until final full transcript submitted.

The documents Pathways sent with what to include was really helpful but I didn’t use my pathways application I rewrote a new one. I also went to open day to meet staff, who were amazing and really encouraging. They made me so excited to start my course. I did a lot of research of the course and activities but the uni also has an applying to master’s toolkit which helped.

Yeah thanks for that. My council emailed them and they do require it but I’m getting it on the 7th so shouldn’t be an issue.

The only thing that puts me off UCL is the fact we'd have to pay the difference between that its fee and that of other uni's. Do you think there is a meaningful difference between courses to warrant that given we'd be employed as is?

Oh I haven’t seen about that, how much is the difference and where did you see that?

my council gave me the option of South Bank and Westminster Uni and I went with Westminster. They’ve not told me anything about applying myself and now I’ve dealt with the HR side of things for my onboarding I’m not too sure what to do from now. I guess we do have two months until the deadline closed for applying for the masters. Strange how different councils are handling it!

UCL is 20k and Southbank and Westminster are both 9k I'm pretty sure. The pamphlet the pathways to planning team also mentioned that we would have to pay the difference and explicitly mentioned UCL

Where did you see that from pathways to planning, was it the email sent on the 20th June? I’ve read through that and it says all tuition fees are covered by the council/them and I can’t find anything speaking about UCL or us being liable to costs, would you mind letting me know what email etc it was a let me know? Thank you!

Is your council using the apprenticeship levy?

No worries! It was the postgrad application document. It said:
If you wish to apply to a course which is more expensive than the course selected by the council
(i.e.: the courses offered by University College London) then you must expect to pay the
difference between the lower-cost equivalent course yourself (this could be up to £8,000 of
additional fees that the council will not cover) if the council agrees to this arrangement.
The cohort info also says:
Alternatively, councils who want to use a part-time master’s degree, offering their graduate a minimum contract of two years to last the duration of study, will receive a bursary of £10,000 per graduate.
So I imagine it depends on the Council's willingness to cover the rest

I don't think so as mine wouldn't be an apprenticeship?

Yeah mine is a degree apprenticeship and I believe it’s fully funded by the council as they have the levy. I haven’t reviewed that document you quoted either - thank you for that btw! Are you on the masters course option?
