Got a 2:2 in my Pharmacy degree

Hi,
I got a 2:2 in my Master of Pharmacy degree and was notified about this today. I got 59.27% overall and I was a smidge away from a 2:1.
It has been incredibly tough these last 4 years and I am neurodiverse as well I am slightly on the spectrum and I have diagnosed combined ADHD. I also suffer from low moods (depression) and anxiety issues.
I was wondering if there were people who were once in my position as well as I have lost hope with everything. I have put an appeal through to see if my university will bump up my grade to a 60% but it would have been more likely if I scored 59.5%.

Luckily my pre-reg year job will accept me for my 2:2, however, I feel very down considering how hard the degree was and the negative press of having a 2:2.

Thank you for your time.

Sometimes things are hard and that's just how they are. Dwelling on it is not going to help you. Firstly, you have a degree. That is a positive. Never mind any old degree - you got through a tough one. You should be celebrating getting a degree because you did it despite having depression and anxiety. That makes you a winner. Many would have given up halfway through. You stuck through it. You are now in the working world and in a while, once you have got work experience, no one is really going to care about the degree result because work experience will count massively. Some people are graduating with medical degrees and they cannot get a job - that's hell. That's outrageous to think you could be a doctor and then you're wandering around unemployed after all that. Look at this article :

The fact that your pre-reg job is accepting you says a lot about you - they don't have to do that but they have so get working. You are now officially employed with a degree. This is good. Shift your perspective and go out and be handsome in the world. You're on your way. Well done!.

Honesty - it doesn't matter.
You have your first job and you are still a qualified Pharmacist.
There is always going to be a demand for Pharmacists and no-one will care about the 2.2.

As someone who graduated with a 2.2 in my degree (Biomedical Science), I can verify that it hasn’t slowed me down personally as once you have your first job (and any relevant registration that comes with your degree as well as requirements), your classification doesn’t mean anything so long as you have the degree. Did my Masters just to give me a bit of a push though just incase it comes down to the wire but I, from what I can tell hasn’t come to that yet (also potential for STP).

So don’t worry about your classification as I sincerely doubt it will make much of a difference!

Hi there,

I know it can feel frustrating when you are so close to the grade that you wanted, but a 2:2 is still a great achievement in such a hard course and you should feel proud of yourself. You have competed your masters degree which is also another achievement in itself.

Most employers won't specifically ask for a grade that you got at Uni, especially as you already have your job lined up which is great and will give you lots of experience if you ever want to change jobs. It is good that your job accepts a 2:2 and as I said, once you have done this year, you will have the experience to progress and show that getting your grade doesn't matter as you are a hard worker.

Try to focus on the positives although I know you are feeling frustrated. You have done well and completed the course! I am sure your loved ones are very proud of you too.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.

Hey there 👋

My name is Siobhan and I’m a third year Physiotherapy student at the University of Central Lancashire. First of all, well done for completing your degree! Pharmacy is a challenging and long course to complete and the fact that you’ve got through all of that with the added struggles you have mentioned is a massive accomplishment to be very very proud of!

I’m sorry to hear that you are feeling upset with your grade and it’s completely normal to want to aim higher! I would put the appeal in and see what the response is 😁

I want to reassure you though that a 2:2 is amazing still and a good portion of people get this in healthcare degrees! I graduated this year and many of friends who got a 2:2 have already got a job lined up just like you!

I actually have a part time job in a hospital pharmacy right now with a lot of pre-reg’s and qualified pharmacists! From what I have seen in pharmacy, I can honestly say that once you get into healthcare, no one really looks at grades at all. They want to see what skills and knowledge you can bring to the team which you clearly have as you have impressed them and got a pre-reg job already!

I know some band 8 Pharmacists that also got a 2:2 in university but now they are in charge of the department. Like I said, in healthcare, grades mean nothing compared to your experience and personality! It’s the same in other professions too like Physio.

I still completely get the frustration though and do think you should try and make a list of all the things that you are proud of! It will hopefully help you shift your mind on the exciting opportunities you have ahead of you and be kinder to yourself 🙂

I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any more questions at all!!

Siobhan (Student Ambassador for the University of Central Lancashire)
