Can I get some advice please, I need to produce design drawings as a freelancer..

Hi guys,

I am an architectural assistant part 2 and a friend of mine asked me if I could prepare him some drawings for a wrap around rear house extension. He said that he will use those drawings to get a quote from builders and possibly apply for planning.
My plan was to do a house survey, prepare couple of design options and then prepare a planning pack. What I am unsure about is weather or not the builders would require detail drawings to be able to price the job?

This will be the first time I take work as a freelancer and would really appreciate some advice.

How much can I get involved with, before I will be required to have liability insurance?
How to protect myself as a freelancer?
Do I produce the design and planning pack and let my friend deal with contractors and building control?
What is a reasonable price to charge and would that be per hour or as a full service?

Thank you very much for your advice!

I only know this from a homeowner perspective. Detailed architect drawings were vital to ensure I knew exactly changes would be made; planning could see what i had planned and check afterwards; and the builder knows exactly what to do, so there is no leeway for doing there own thing because it did not have sufficient detail or get mixed up, all calculations for weight and safety made, and the builders can give an accurate quote.

I'm not sure if anyone can advice on the rest but I hope this helps a little.
