TSR Hot Topics 2025: Book Recommendations

Poll

What is your favourite book genre?

As someone who hasn't read a book in ages, I'm looking forward to reading new books but I have no idea where to start.

I normally read books from a crime/thriller genre but I'm comfortable with reading from different genres but I just wanted to hear your recommendations as well (also I have seen some of the booktok book recommendations and wanted to know whether they are worth reading as well).

This is also a space for people to talk about their favourite books/authors (as well as ones to stay clear of) and why.

Here are the main guidelines for this thread:

Anyone is welcome. The more the merrier.

Make sure all comments are respectful. Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion.

If you're revealing something important about the book (e.g. the ending), please put it in a spoiler block bc not everyone will have got to the same point yet.

If there are any issues please let me know.
Happy reading!!!

I'm a huge Stephen King fan but I didn't see any horror section so I've voted for other! he is seen as a bit basic but the Dark Tower series (7 books) is still my favorite set of books I've ever read!

I do mostly non fiction these days. (Indian) Philosophy, (Indian) religion, history, art history is a fave.

When I do read fiction it's old stuff mostly, not for any particular reason other than I started reading a few 'classics' and went down a rabbit hole. Tolstoy is probably my all time favourite. Ivan Ilyich is a good start.

That sounds so cool. 🤩 I'll have a read of some non-fiction boos sometime soon then.

I really like Donna Tart’s - The Secret History, gripping, funny, slightly surreal. Especially good if you like classics

These book recommendations are totally random cause there ones I have read and have totally different genres.
Killer instinct - crime solving, teen drama, love triangle. U should read the first book naturals first if u want a better understanding.
Birthday and If I was your girl - same author but two totally different characters/story, lgbtq, teen love
Baby in the box - been ages since i have read it so unsure if accurate title, not entirely sure of the genre (teen?)
My favourite is definitely science fiction/dystopia, with fantasy coming a close second.

Recommendations:
Science fiction and dystopia: Fahrenheit 451, Nineteen Eighty-Four, The Handmaid's Tale, The Hunger Games (series), The Windup Girl, Noughts and Crosses (series), Ready Player One (duology), Brave New World, The Host
Fantasy: The Wheel of Time series, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings (series), The Empyrean series (mature content), His Dark Materials, The Great Library series, Empires of Dust trilogy (mature content)
I like to read classic books. I have finished The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and everyone who likes Gabriel Garcia Marquez's magic realism may delight to read it.

Unconscious Memory - Terrell Bainbridge.
