Travelling to sixth forms

Hi I’m a Y11 student who has finished their GCSEs trying to make a choice on what sixth form to go to. The best achieving sixth forms in London are generally more than a 1.5 hour travel from me such as Brampton Manor , LAE etc. I have applied and generally got offers. To those who currently attend sixth forms what is your opinion on travelling to sixth form as currently I feel like it’s simply something I wouldn’t be up for to do but still I’d like to hear some advice. Right now I am more inclined to some closer options such as St Dominic’s or my current secondary schools sixth form. Thanks

One hour travelling time is fairly common in London for 6th form but once you start getting to 1.5 hours, that's a lot - 3 hours a day, or 15 hours a week.

If you've got offers from Brampton Manor and LAE then you're clearly already a very high achieving student. So, you need to consider if you can continue at that level in other schools closer to you.

Also think what is your journey going to be like? If you have to take multiple trains/tubes/buses then that is going to increase the chances of you being late to school if there is a problem along the way. Also, if you are going to be standing for a significant proportion of the journey then that will be even more tiring and a lost opportunity to perhaps catch up on homework.

My son has offers from several schools that are up 1 to 1.75 hours journey. For his preferred option, the train is not that busy so he can have a seat to work and there are options to do part of the journey by car. We met several students at those schools who are travelling 3-4 hours a day. So it's doable but draining.

You also need to think about how much the travel would cut into your hobbies, social life etc.

it takes me around 3-4 hrs everyday to get to brampton and I would say it is very draining when you first start, especially when brampton itself is already high stress and draining. But now I’ve found it rewarding since it really allowed me to practice my time management and made me realised how many things I could get done in a day.

As other people have already said but I would just like to add more . You should really think about the time as 1.5 hours of travelling is quite a lot and if you are someone who can’t really wake up early then you should factor that in as well . I want to go to lae but it takes me an hour and 15 mins to reach there . Although I wake up quite early so that shouldn’t be a problem for me . Also travelling 1.5 hours for 5 days a week can be very tiring and after the travel you have school work to do as well . Before deciding where you want to go , think about what is best for you . Can you make it to the 6th form on time ? Will the travel affect your work study ? Also travelling that far and going to school would take up most of the day so you would barely have any time to rest . By rest I mean stuff you like , video games , piano , football, etc . Because you have to do a lot of work at home , not just in school and if it takes you that long just to travel , you have to think is it worth it ? Although I suggest going as they have students who go to top universities but again it’s up to you . But anyways good luck and I hope for you to get the GCSEs you want .
