Hi so I’m looking to apply to medicine, and I’ve wanted to do so for as long as I remember. I just am quite in the dark with applications and what I need to do, so I was hoping someone could give me their opinions of whether I would make a decent applicant. I think I’m doing okay, but obviously I have no idea what anyone else is doing so I don’t know what the minimum/ standard amount is that people do. I want to apply to medicine at QMUL, Sheffield, Manchester and still unsure on my 4th choice. I am aware that UCAT will influence where I apply to a lot, so my main focus right now is working on that. Here are my stats:
GCSES- 9999999875 (7 in art, 5 in Spanish ahahah)
A level predicted- A*A*A in biology, maths and chemistry respectively
- I volunteer weekly at my local hospital
- I have shadowed a GP
- I have shadowed a dentist
- I have done a MOOC on immunology, and a MOOC on cancer
- I have attended two seminars, one on AI in medicine which I didn’t understand too well, so I will look into that- and another on studying the behaviour of cancer using MRI scanning
- I did a school short essay/ project which I got 9/10 on, on fMRI scanning on the brain (this is also why I went to the seminar)
- I have also read a few chapters on a book about the brain to help me do this, and just to get background information- I also used this to make presentations also brain related for biology and chemistry, which I presented to my class.
- I tutor (voluntarily) maths chemistry and biology to students in the younger years of my school
- I am on an academic scholarship, and have had one since year 9.
- I did do the biology Olympiad, but I didn’t do to well (commended 😢) because I was super sick on the day! So I probably won’t mention that.
- backround info about me, I was a refugee and have experienced homelessness. I am not considering contextual offers though, because I go to private school (on a scholarship tho!) so I think that I can’t get it anyways. I also have spent a lot of my life here so I don’t want to take advantage of my backround too much. I am bilingual too! so that all adds a bit of something unique 🙃
- I am also (hopefully) going to undertake some virtual work experience. So this is what I am thinking about doing right now. I am very busy so I’m hoping that is possible - I was considering reading a book but I would rather actually understand what I am studying so that I can confidently talk about it in an interview, rather than read a book just for the sake of it. Not only would it take up a lot of my time, but I also wouldn’t benefit from it much personally for that reason (not actually being able to digest the information and learn from it due to time constraints).
But yeah, main focus after I finish up my MOOC and maybe do some virtual work experience, will be UCAT! I also need to write my personal statement draft this weekend for school, but I think that I have enough to start it- so it should be okay.
I just really want to go to Manchester or QMUL because I fell in love with the campus. I just need someone’s honest opinion if that is realistic?
