foreign literature in an oxbridge english lit personal statement?

hello all!!! i had a question: i’m applying to oxford for joint history/english this year, and wanted to go hyper niche for an interest i had for both particularly in the region of latin america (19th-20th century resistance in the region.) my issue is, i’m not sure if it’s an issue that the texts i want to discuss were not originally written in english. is it better to take a broader approach rather than be so specific? i know its an ENGLISH degree and i am well-read in english classics, but just wanted to discuss my particular interest/passion for latam lit/history.

thank you!!
Oxford English lit is very specifically "literature in English" - literature in other languages are serviced by the modern language degrees there (which are very literature focused).

If you are specifically interested in that area why not apply for Spanish and History? You will cover Hispanic literature in that course, as well as the history options of relevance, and develop language skills which are undoubtedly essential if you wanted to work with the primary historical texts and literature in their original language directly

thank you for the reply!! i unfortunately don’t take a modern language and have no grounding in spanish so wouldn’t meet the entry requirements for that. do you think i’d possibly be able to discuss an interest in postcolonial literature then, and then talk about some english works + some latin american works as well? just because the history portion of my PS is solely focused on that region :-)

again, thank you so much for the reply! this is incredibly helpful

If it's the postcolonial perspectives you're interested in broadly and this has emerged more specifically in the context of modern South and Central American history then I think that's fair game

Maybe also worth exploring the ideas of cultural imperialism (and their critiques) and postcolonial issues to do with language vis a vis literature in translation or written in a second language (i.e. English in this case)! There probably is quite a lot of meat on the bone there to read around and write about for sure I expect! :h:
