Can I request only 12 hour shifts?

Hey, I’m a first year nursing student on my final placement of the year. I’ve been put in an outpatients clinic ophthalmology and I can’t actually do anything, can’t administer no eyedrops etc, no meds to give out or just anything really to get involved with except eye tests? I know loads of people love this department but I have ADHD, I’ve been on meds for years and I’m struggling so hard with this placement! I’m underestimulated as there’s very little for me to do, I’m sat down all day aside from taking obs. I’m unfocused because the hours are so short and I’m bouncing off the walls by the end of it,

I do really well on 12 hour shifts, the pace is perfect for me (I’ve worked as a carer for a long time so know that they are a good fit for me long term), I’ve learned so much and I’m always throwing myself in as there’s things to throw myself in to. The 9-5 doesn’t seem great for my head, I’m still doing well but I feel like I’m getting burned out or the ADHD equivelant

Would requesting to do 12 hour shifts and not the 7 hour clinic shifts be something that would be a reasonable adjustment? The PEF team said yes but the placement allocations team are scratching their head at me right now because the PEF didn’t give an explanation of the ALN

What you need to get put in place is, where I am, called a RAPP - Reasonable Adjustments in Practice Placement. It's done through the university and is usually put in place prior to starting placement. I've only known one student ever had one put in place during placement. Even if you got one put in place now, then getting this one particular placement changed to somewhere which does 12 hour shifts could potentially be really awkward and would disrupt being able to assess you in practice for the remainder of this placement - although it would be a great thing for allocating your future placements and helping support you in practice. It's certainly is a reasonable adjustment, with good reason - which you have.

Hey, thank you.

I’ve got an occupational health meeting next week thank god! I really still want to change somewhere so much - every proficiency for year 1 is signed off, the inpoint assessment etc, the only thing not signed in my Epad will be the midway and end learning contract review you have to do for each placement.

I’m struggling now to go in, it’s really disrupting my enjoyment of the course - I was loving every single minute but after this last month I don’t know if I have the spoons to go on because it’s made my mental health so bad (which I know sounds very pathetic). So hopefully they can change it within the placement, if not I’m going to have to ask if I can have a day off each week I guess.

Thank you x
