Vet Med without Chemistry A Level?

Just finished my A Levels in Biology, Psychology and Eng Lit. I have a place to study Biomedical Science this September but Vet Med courses seem much more interesting to me personally and I think I'd really enjoy it. Any advice on how I could go about applying for this without Chem A Level? It's really getting me down seeing how so many unis require Chemistry A Level.

I've heard that the course doesn't require much Chemistry, so taking out another year to do Chem A Level isn't my first choice.

Take a look at UCLan's course. I don't think they require chemistry.

For veterinary, unless you applied by October 15th last year, you would be looking at applying for 2026 entry. Since that's the case, it might be a good idea to do chemistry so you open up the universities you can apply to.

I would recommend that you don't do a degree to then progress to veterinary as there is no tuition-fee loan support for doing it as a second degree.

Even if you can find a Uni that doesn't require Chem, just be aware that without it, any 'medical' degree will be harder - especially if you didnt take Chem because you struggle with it.

Thee are plenty of other 'working with animals' degrees - Zoology, Marine Biology, Animal Conservation, Animal Science, Animal Welfare, Vet Nursing etc etc. And plenty of other career pathways - Jobs working with animals | Prospects.ac.uk

I think you're going to struggle applying for Vet Med with no chemistry and only one science subject.

It’s also the amount of work experience you need to demonstrate by the October deadline - veterinary medicine is highly competitive and you need to show a long term commitment and understanding of the role and what it entails. It isn’t like other subjects where you can apply at short notice. because you think your A levels are appropriate. https://www.bva.co.uk/your-career/becoming-a-vet/ may help

Hi! Not sure where you are up to (but thought this might help others). Do not apply to Surrey unless you meet their exact requirements OR have spoken to them beforehand on email with your situation. Lots of bio/related degree graduates even have not had enough chemistry in their degree for Surrey to consider them (I have heard some people were told they were eligible then were rejected despite confirming this prior? Not sure). Bristol and RVC both have accelerated routes which need just a degree (though this is self-funded and more competitive than standard routes), Keele do not need Chemistry and I don't think UCLan do either. It is 100% possible to chase a dream ☺️x
