Bangor student Accommodation

Hi!

I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube videos about preparing and moving into uni accommodation. What you need and what you don’t need and etc. I don’t know if it differs between universities.

So for Bangor, does anyone have any tips or advice what to bring with me? Or what not to bring? I know there’s the obvious stuff, but is there anything specifically that would benefit me in the long run? Also is there page that lists off what you need to bring with you? Just so I can compare it to my own list to what I’ve made, I don’t know whether I’ve went overboard lol.

Thank you

Hi xstalx,

Thanks for your question. This is something I was going to publish on Campus Connect in a few weeks, but I don't see the harm in sharing it here with you now. It looks like you've been doing a lot of reseach, so I hope this is not too boring. You obviously asked for Bangor specifics, so I would say that some of the important things here for you is: Do you have a single bed or a small double bed (Ffriddoedd is single or St Mary's is small double - but not Bryn Eithin) and do you have a shared bathroom (Bryn Eithin).

Hi there! Thank you for getting back to me! This will help a lot! Just a few more odd questions if you don’t mind answering for me.

If I bring a TV with me, but I only use a firestick, do I still need a tv license? Or because I’m bringing a TV full stop is why I need one?

I’ve noted that cooking appliances are a no-go in bedrooms, does that include kettles?

The documents, will the following below be posted to me before hand or when I arrive to move in?
Uni acceptance letter
—Accommodation offer/contract
—Student Finance Documents

I have a medical condition that requires me to order my medication monthly from my pharmacist, how do I go about sorting this out in preparation for uni? Do I change it with my pharmacy or consult my GP to sort this out?

What is the public transport like around the area? Is there any student passes for buses and trains etc?

What is the storage like for kitchen essentials? For example do we get a fridge shelf each, a cupboard each, etc?

I will be staying in Ffriddeodd Village, I’ll be having one of the newer accommodation rooms, can the windows open quite far or or do they open to a limit?

What is the gym on campus like? Is it used quite frequently?

And just out of curiosity for lesser importance, what are the takeaway options around the area and what are they like?

Thank you so much once again!

Hey xstalx! 👋

Thanks for sending in your questions! I’ve tried to answer them all as clearly as I can. Sorry if some of my answers sound a bit short I’m just trying to keep it straight to the point 😅 (I’m usually a bit of a rambler, tbh).

📺 TV Licence This one can get a bit tricky, so def check the TV licensing site to be sure. BUT the basics are:

You need a TV licence if you're watching live TV or anything on BBC iPlayer

You don’t need one for Netflix, Disney+, YouTube etc unless you're watching something live There are fines if you get it wrong so it’s worth double-checking! ⚠️

🔌 Appliances Yep no personal appliances (like kettles or toasters) in the bedrooms. Everything like that has to stay in the kitchen! ☕🍞

📃 Documents You’ll get all the important info (like your contract, Welcome Week details, etc.) either by post 📬 or email 📧 before you arrive.

💊 Medical Stuff If you’re on regular medication same boat here here’s what I did: Before I moved to uni, I told my home GP I was relocating and needed two months' worth of meds. They sorted me out
Then once I got to uni, I registered with a local GP and continued getting my prescription there.
Also, prescriptions are FREE in Wales 🎉 (if you're used to paying, this is a win!).
More info on registering with a GP: 👉 Bangor GP info page

🚌 Public Transport There is public transport around, but you probs won’t need it for uni stuff everything’s walkable 👣 That said, buses run every 30-60 mins to nearby towns (great for day trips!).
🚆 The train station is close to Ffriddoedd and connects you to places like Conwy, Chester and even London in 3.5 hours! You can apply for a railcard to save money too. SOme bank gies yu a free railcard when you open a student account with them. I just did a quick internet search and I can see that Santander offers one. Please look into this properly though as I am not a financial advisor. This is a great place to look at bank accounts: Money Saving Expert website
More travel info here: 👉 Bangor travel & trips

🍽️ Kitchen Storage You’ll get loads of space in the kitchen:

1 cupboard

1 fridge shelf

1 freezer shelf

Check out the video for a full look (kitchen stuff is shown at 1:41): 🎥 Ffriddoedd Village

🪟 Windows The windows do only open a bit (safety + security reasons), but they’re big and still let in loads of fresh air 🌬️

🏋️ Gym You get FREE membership to the Canolfan Brailsford gym if you live in halls 💪 It’s a great gym can get busy, but once you settle in you’ll figure out the best quiet times to go.

🍕 Takeaways So many options near Ffriddoedd! Think pizza, Chinese, kebabs… all within walking distance 😋 And of course, you’ve got Deliveroo and Just Eat if you want stuff from a bit further away. Treat yourself!

Hope that clears everything up shout if you’ve got more questions! 😊👍
