St Andrews degree structure

Hello
To my understanding, you take three subjects in your first year, 2/3 in your second year, then specialise in your honours years. My question is: do you get to take any optional modules in your first two years?
I like the idea of taking multiple subjects, as I really like all of my A levels. However, I'm not sure how I feel about having no real choice in what I'm studying until my third year.
Is this how it works? If so, how have you found it? Is this the same for all Scottish universities?
Thanks!

Hi I went with my daughter to St Andrews offer holder day in April. As I understand from the talks, you do three modules in first and second year….one of these will be the subject for which you got the offer for eg psychology and you can then choose two others. You could choose very differing subjects for your other two eg a student we talked to had Arabic as one of hers, or you might want to consider what is useful with the subject you applied for, for example the psychology professor told us that if you continued with Biology as one of your modules all the way through, you could graduate with a neuroscience degree. I found one of the most interesting stats that we heard was that 45% of students graduate with a different degree to the one they applied for, this is from the head of admissions which was the first talk we attended. I guess this would happen if you continued in 3rd and 4th with the one/two modules from first and second year that were not the subject you had the offer for. The psychology professor said that although the number of offers for psychology is not a relatively large number, the lectures can be quite large due it being popular for students choosing it for one their options. It sounds like a very flexible degree structure which definitely has benefits if you like additional subjects or aren’t completely sure and want some choices after starting your degree.

Hi, current student here at St Andrews you need to take 120 module credits a year. In first year this generally means you will take 6 20 credit modules, how much choice you get depends on your programme requirements, i.e in my first year I only needed to take one 20 credit module for my degree (Maths) and so I was able to choose from any other modules for the remaining 100 credits (subject to timetabling and such).
