Hi! This year, I have gotten plenty of grade 9 equivalents but I occasionally make silly mistakes or drop marks which make my percentage drop to 90-95%. I always strive for above 95% but I don’t always get there. Are there any tips to go from 90%’s to 100%’s in grades? I always try to learn material thoroughly and spend plenty of time revising but still I make a few mistakes which stops me from getting those 100%’s. I am desperate to have a report card next year that is full of 100%’s and also want to prove to myself that I can do it. Year by year, I have been getting higher and higher grades, but when I get less than someone else in my class, it frustrates me. I need to be the top student. Especially with my GCSE’s…
P.s. I’m thinking of applying to Oxford or Cambridge Medicine and I’m aware you need top grades for both the University and course, so apart from my perfectionist nature, that’s another reason for my grade grinding.

You will get grades on your certificate not marks.

Hiya,

You mention grade 9 equivalents - are you an international student? Either way, Oxford used to treat grades 9 and 8 at GCSE level as equal (and I believe this is still their policy). So you don't need to get 100% and it's not a healthy mindset to have, to constantly be trying to get 100%. If you were to get into either Oxford or Cambridge for medicine, you would very soon find yourself getting nowhere near 100% in your marks at those unis, and having to learn to live with being a non-100% or even 'mediocre' student.

Lower the pressure and self-expectations: you'll be doing yourself a favour in the long-run, both academically and healthwise

Hey @Soobeanie!

90-95% is an excellent score to achieve on any practice GCSE paper - well done! It's important to try and put your grades into perspective rather than worrying about falling short of a 'perfect' score. Silly mistakes are just a natural part of sitting exams - although they can definitely be frustrating, they aren't a true reflection of your subject knowledge or competency. 🙂

I achieved 11 A*'s at GCSE and typically scored 85-95% on my practice papers. Whilst 100% can be tempting, it's not necessary to achieve a top grade.

Hope this helped and best of luck with your GCSEs!
Eve (Kingston Rep).

The whole post is problematic, but this part is even more so. This really isn't a healthy attitude to have towards your academic work.

What worries me here, from an Oxford or Cambridge point of view, is that you're likely not going to be the top student, or possibly anywhere near. People can struggle sometimes going from being a big fish in a small pond to a very small fish in a very big pond when they go up. It's perhaps something to reflect on, along with the rest of it.

'top grades'≠100%
