SFE - Returning Student - Nursing

Hi all,

I'm just trying to find out if I am eligible for SFE as a returning student who completed 1 year of uni previously (repeated 1st year twice due to personal issues).

Backstory - I went to uni when I was 18 to do English, had a really rough first year and ended up re-doing my first year. However, I ended up dropping out around April time of my first year due to a number of personal reasons. I paid back what I owed from SFE for the maintenance loan and was completely against going back to uni. However, 10 years later, I'm now looking at going into nursing, but can't seem to find any answers on if I am eligible for the tuition loan/maintenance loan for the full 3 year course.

If anybody has any advice, answers, or literally anything, then that would be greatly appreciated! I'm hoping to call SFE when they're open again, but feel silly calling when they'll be dealing with the Clearing students etc.

Thanks in advance

Hi 25Poolethegal,

If you have 3 years of previous study, and are looking to attend a new 3 year course, the calculation would be 3+1-3= 1 year left of full support applied to year 3 of the new course. The 1st and 2nd year would only have the Maintenance Loan and grants awarded where applicable as you would need to self fund your Tuition Fees. You mentioned Compelling Personal Reasons, therefore you might be able to get the Tuition Fee Loan for years 1 and 2 if you can provide evidence for the 2 repeat years being interrupted due to your circumstances at the time. We can accept a letter from a 3rd party professional that would confirm what happened, when this happened and how this directly impacted your studies. You would just apply as normal and upload the evidence along with a cover letter to your account explaining that you wish to apply for the Tuition Fee Loan for both years due to your Compelling Personal Reasons.

Isn't nursing an exception course?

Hi Clare,

Thank you for the reply.

It was only the 1 year of study completed but I repeated the year and dropped out half way through, so unsure if this counts as 2 years study? If this is the case, what would I be entitled to in regards to tuition fees/maintenance? Does the nursing course count as an exemption from the usual 3 + 1 - whatever my previous study counts as?

Thanks in advance!

Hi David,

It will be Adult Nursing but unsure of which university as it will be for 2026/27 entry.

Hope this helps!

Hi there. Nursing is an exception course, so as long as it's an eligible nursing course we wouldn't take your previous study into account. Therefore you would have access to full funding without evidence. Thanks, Leah.

Hi Leah,

That’s absolutely lovely, thank you so much for your reply! Can I just double check what counts as an eligible nursing course, or what makes it not eligible? Sorry if that sounds like a stupid question!!

So long as the course has Nursing in the title, or some variant (like Adult, Mental Health etc) then that's normally fine.

We can check other courses here, too, just let us know.

Thanks, Graeme
